L guy with an XL framewarmseth

i'll preface this by saying i am an ultra newbie. i am 5'11" 185lbs. i just got a terrific deal on an 02 enduro. but it is an xl. i have shortened the stem to a 80mm, and slid the seat pretty far forward. it feels ok pedaling but i am concerned that i have made a mistake. i keep reading "avove all, get a frame that fits" but i could not pass up the deal i got on this one. am i starting off on the wrong foot?

you are starting off on the wrong feet. With an improper frame the riding will be less than adequate to allow for maximum fun with the least energy output and pain/soreness.

Here's a couple of things to check that are just rules of thumb, not exact directions for fit: 1) When sitting on the saddle with your feet in the 3 and 9 o'clock position is the forward knee approximately centered vertically with the pedal axle? 2) Are your arms slightly flexed? 3) Can you slide off the rear of the saddle with relative ease? 4) Do you have at least an inch or so of standover height when straddling the frame with feet flat on the ground? 5) When seated naturally is your handlebar lined up with the front hub/axle?

These are just general guidlines and are not meant as exact rules you must follow for a proper fit. They are used to make sure you aren't too stretched out, that your center of gravity is not too far forward or back when cruising along, that you can move on your bike easily to allow for change of terrain, and to help keep your body from undue stress due to being improperly positioned on the bike.

Sometimes a good deal isn't one.

I am 6'4" 200# and ride an XL Enduro. I ran it w/ a 90mm stem then went to a 75mm stem. 5'8" sounds a lot like a medium. If it was a goog deal you could sell it and put the profit towards a bike that fits.
Like a deal on shoesJimC.

the wrong size is a mistake. That said, I just bought an '03 Enduro, they are being cleared at $1049 Bicycle Centre of Everett, WA, (425)252-1441 and $1099@ Supergo.

I'm 5'11" and 185, with a 31" inseam (shorter legs, longer torso.)

the Large is perfect for me. The XL I tried and it's too big. You're doing the right thing with the stem and seat, but if it's new and you're not feeling right on it, I'd try to return it or see if the LBS will swap it out for you to a large?

Everyone is different, it's better to have it a bit big than too small, but check out the fit and take it from there. Good luck, Jim
Shame on your LBS for putting you on the wrong size bikeinnergel

As others have said, it doesn't matter how good a deal it is if it does not fit. Take it back and see if they will swap it out for the proper size bike.

If you didn't buy it from an LBS, then try to sell it and get something that fits.

yeah i bought it out of the newspaper from a private seller. i knew the size was not right but the price was $400 (i ran the serial # with the police and NO it's not reported stolen). and for that price i could not resist. i think i will likely sell it as recommended and buy a large or perhaps even a medium...i want something that feels small under me when i'm throwing it around.
