Help...I need a new bike !(7 posts)

Help...I need a new bike !Aquarius83
Dec 24, 2003 6:57 PM
Alright, its around Xmas and there are some great deals on bikes going on. I am having a damn hard time trying to choose something to please me... I am looking at a few right now, which include a Gary Fisher Sugar 3+, Trek Liquid 20, and a Giant VT2...all '03 models. Obviously I am in the market for a Full Suspension bike, and don't wanna break the bank.

WHAT THE HELL SHOULD I GET ??

I really like the VT2 setup, but its a lot more expensive then the Gary Fisher. Sugar3+ 's got no disc brakes though...don't wanna be stuck upgrading everything for disc's later (or do i need to bother?)
Both forks seem a little weak...

I am facing a tough desicion, anyone have any helpful ideas ??

Aquaman,
I would get the sugar 3. If your riding is not XC aggressive (6' drops, long decents 6mi or so, extreamly technical) get the sugar. you can do aggressive XC, but will be able to climb. There is almost not bobbing on the sugar as I am a sugar 1 owner. the sugar is not sexy looking, but it works. Disc for later.....

I passed a VT2 rider up hill on my 1994 trek 930 single speed. The trek liquid is horse. See with the sugar you can race your friends or set the rear for 4" and do more agressive stuff. The VT2 design can get old fast.

the frame is the most important part of the bike in all respects. when it comes down to it, if you have two bikes with slightly different part specs and you're having a hard time deciding, get the bike with the better frame. you can upgrade parts later down the line. in this case, i'd think that the Sugar is a more tried-and-true design. as for disc brakes, they are necessary on XC bikes like they are on DH bikes. you may want them if you are always riding in mud and/or snow, but otherwise, v-brakes will be sufficient.

I don't want to confuse you any further, but I just saw (and rode) one of the new Haro extreme series bikes and you get a LOT of bike for the money. Without knowing what you plan on doing with it, I would at least say to look at them......
got $1100?phil..

Check out a closeout 03 Specialized Enduro. Most who seem to ride them like them pretty well. For $1100 they seem to me the best deal around for that type of bike.

I just upgraded to a full suspension bike recently too and faced a similar dilemma. I opted to buy a new frame (2003 giant ac 2) and swapped some parts frome my hardtail. My frame was only 400.00 bucks, found it here in the classifieds, brand new! Its a cheap and fun way to have a customized new bike.
