Pedal Question - Shimano M-545(7 posts)

Pedal Question - Shimano M-545STC Rider
Dec 25, 2003 11:50 AM
I'm new to riding in the cold (below freezing) weather and have had trouble keeping my feet warm (but am absolutely loving every other aspect!). Some have suggested that, when it gets quite cold, I should to abandon my clip-in pedals and ride on platforms with warm boots/winter shoes. Not a bad idea. I'm looking at perhaps getting pedals that I can both clip into and use as platforms. The Shimano M-545s (and others of that family)refer to a pop-up mechanism. Can I use this pedal as both platform when I'm not clipping in, as well as to clip into? My clip-ins are of the "tennis-shoe" type with a rubber sole surrounding the SPD cleat, and I'm not sure those would work. Other suggestions welcome. Merry Christmas to all.
My opinion is to...fred³

buy a good set of flat pedals(pedals with clipin on one side and flats on the other are okay, but in a pinch you don't want to be messing with trying to flip to pedal over to the proper side) with the replaceable pins. Then try various winter shoes/boots to see which grip best. Watch the pins though. They can bite the shins.
Agreed...combo pedals never work well..Danny

They are too slippery as platforms and difficult to clip in and out of. Buy yourself a pair of inexpensive platforms. I also prefer the stamped pedals. They weigh less and are much nicer on the shins. I've had good luck with these.

that they're very good in mud I've heard no reports about subfreezing weather and those are the conditions he's refering to. Do you ride in subfreezing weather?

I got 'em, and I gotta say, they kinda suck in mud a bit. I have to click in and out a lot to clear mud out of the cleats... just to free them up. They are usable without cleats, but they are not great.

I got 'em cause I like to clip out for freaky stuff, but still wanted decent stick unclipped.

I would suggest winter shoes if it really gets too cold for Smartwool socks or baggie-toes. Either that, or platforms like the others have said.
