| Clean Avid Mechs after a muddy ride? | NASALaunch1 Jan 2, 2004 4:34 PM | | Hi, after going on a muddy ride, I noticed my avid mechanical disc brakes were kind of rubbing and I was wondering, should i clean the pads/rotors after muddy rides? How do i do that? Also, should i drop some lube on the brake cable where it goes into the housing on the mechanical disc brake? thanks,

| Typically no | Not Duckman Jan 2, 2004 4:55 PM | | ...you needn't do anything. That noise usually goes away fast during the next use. If you feel you've reeeeeally thrashed them at some point, you can pull the pads and sand'm, wire wheel brush'm, whatever. But, thats usually only called for if you glaze'm real bad, say down a loooooong descent. The resin will cook to the top and then they start to sqeal until that glaze is worn away.
No lube in the brake cable. Only attracts dirt. One "can" pull the inner cable out of the housing every so often, and clean it. Then blow out the housings with a bigass compressor if ya have one like i do, then stick it back together. This just makes a given cable set last longer is all. |

| What Not Duckman sez | JimC. Jan 3, 2004 7:51 AM | | just keep drive train clean and tuned, the rest can stay muddy a bit. On the Norshore, almost every ride is muddy, I don't recall anyone cleaning discs.
Cheers, Jim |
