| hydration system bladder - how to dry them? | nampla Jan 6, 2004 3:11 AM | | Howdy!
Yeah, how you people dry those things? It wriggles and tries to go flat, which means it will never get dry inside - so some ugly smell and taste are due. And what about the straw - can not get it dry completely. I've heard about using mild solution of household bleach and thorough rinse - but it does not solve problem of making it dry afterwards.

| Firstly... | fred³ Jan 6, 2004 4:13 AM | | I only put water in it. Second I always store it in the fridge. Haven't had to do one thing to it in over 3 years and it's as clean as the day I bought it.
Cleaning-I'm told one of those denture tablets will do the trick. As for the hose I'd make up a solution of about a teaspoon of bleach and a half gallon of water and pour it through, or you could just by the camelbak cleaning brushes. |
| Yep... | JimC. Jan 6, 2004 9:25 AM | | rinse mine and then throw it in the freezer. About 1x a year I use a tabelspoon of bleach to rinse it. 4 years no problems. BTW I've tried every other method and this works best for me. Even one of those plastic bladder hanger thingies didn't work well. Jim |
| I guess I live on the edge | laffeaux Jan 6, 2004 2:21 PM | | I only use water in mine too, however, I never dry or clean it. After a ride I empty it, blow backwards through the line to clear it, and then toss the pack into a corner full of bike crap.
Last summer I replaced the original bladder in the Camelback that I recieved for X-mas in 1998. After 5 years without cleaning the water still tasted fine. Although the bladder was discolored from the pack, it did not appear to be filled with any thriving organisms.
I do use water from a filtered tap. Maybe that preserves it? |
| I grew some critters | JimC. Jan 6, 2004 2:43 PM | | with spines and eyes one year, they were lumpy going down, I thought it was just mud. Bzzzzzztttttt. But I was trying out Gatorade within. Never again.
I'm migrating to the "leave it in the pack in the garage and hope it's OK" method, which seems to work OK so far.

| Dry'm? Clean'm? LOL! | Not Duckman Jan 6, 2004 3:16 PM | | I'm terrible about this. I have 4 liter MSR dorms, Platy big gulps and 1 ltr hydros, CB 70 and 100s, and just about everyone of them have never..um..i mean seldom washed or dried. Lucky if they make it to the freezer even. I have a couple of those cleaning kits and hit'm every now and then.
Usually ride everyday, and the CBs are in a mass of riding sh#t right now in my explorer..as always. Prob freezing tonight anyway. See..self maintaining action going on there.:) |
| re: hydration system bladder - how to dry them? | Wraith Jan 6, 2004 9:26 AM | | I use the CamelBak Reservoir Dryer. It's collapsible so you can simply slips inside the reservoir. At which point it will expand and to keep the keep the wall of the reservoir apart. Then you just hang the bladder up to dry via the clothes hanger type hook.

Bleach works fine for cleaning. About two teaspoon of bleach, fill the baddler with water, then let it soak over night, brush it out the next morning. To fresh it up afterward you might want do the same thing with two teaspoon of baking soda. |
| re: hydration system bladder - how to dry them? | Erok Jan 6, 2004 7:45 PM | | I never clean mine. I just empty it and blow the water out of the tube and throw it in the freezer untill the next ride. I've been using the same bladder for 3 years, no problems. |
| Dry it and freeze it | wg Jan 7, 2004 1:17 PM | | After a wash (I use Cytomax) I do a quick dry of the bladder with a paper towel and stuff a bent coat hanger with a towel overnight. Usually because I don't want to take the time to really dry it and I'm too cheap to buy the Camelbak dryer thingy.
Then shove it into the freezer. No problems for some time now.
