I need a new rear wheel...(5 posts)

I need a new rear wheel...Dave30o802094

I discovered yesterday that I broke off a spoke so I just decided to get a new rear wheelset, but I have no idea what size I need. My wheels I use are 26 X 2.1. What size wheelset will I need or is there just a standard 26" size for mountai bikes. Is there anything else I need to consider? I would appreciate the help.

Dave,

26" wheels are the standard size for mountain bikes.

Broken spokes are simple to fix and far cheaper than a new wheel. You should be able to take it to a LBS and have fixed for $6 bucks or so.

You can pick up a decent wheelset (both front and rear) online for around $100 (Rhyno lite rims / lx hubs). These will be machine built, which means spoke tension may not be even all around, which yields a less strong wheel compared to a properly trued and tensioned wheel. However, you could buy a wheelset online and then true and tension it yourself or take it to your LBS and have them do it for you.

What has made you decide to buy a new rear wheel because of a broken spoke? Strength? Weight? etc..?

Out of curiosity, why get a new rear wheel because of a broke spoke. It's pretty inexpensive to replace the spoke. Replacing a spoke is about $20-$30 bucks (including labor) vs several hundred for a new wheel.

Anyway, standard MB wheels are 26". When looking at wheel sets, size isn't really a problem. What you really should consider is strength and weight. That depend on the type of riding you do (free ride vs say XC) you might want maximize one over the other.
20-30 bucks?! you need to change shops!timmy
