| LX or XT | chaotic mess! Jan 9, 2004 7:56 PM | | I noticed lx hubs are lighter than xt. Is it cuz xt are stronger? Should I get xt over lx for my mavics? |
| where did you see the weight published? | laffeaux Jan 10, 2004 12:22 AM | | According to Shimano.com, XT is significantly lighter. |
| confusing weights. | Danny Jan 10, 2004 7:08 AM | | Seems some quote with skewers and some without. Shimano publishes the weights on their website....though I don't know if you can find the older stuff. |
| Bad info | CHAOTIC MESS Jan 10, 2004 8:55 AM | | Sorry about my post. XT is a lot lighter. I forget where I got my info from but I will be getting the XT hubs. |
| Maybe your're looking at XT disc hub weights | pimpbot Jan 11, 2004 1:00 PM | | XT Disc hubs are a bunch heavier than the regular because they have larger flanges to take the spoke load from disc braking, and the mount for the disc itself.
XT disc hubs are pretty frickin heavy compared to just about everybody else's disc hubs, OTOH, they are pretty bulletproof as well.
Weight at the hub is not that important. Yes it rotates, but at so close to the center of the wheel, it's practically static weight. If you're worried about rotating weight, look at a light rim and spokes. I got some XT disc hubs with Bontrager Mustang rims with DT DB spokes, and that makes a good light strong wheel that takes some abuse from my 205# XC riding ass, without spendig a mint. I hardly ever have to true them. I think the new Bonti Mustangs have tubeless rim strips as well, so you can save more weight and rolling resistance to boot.
IMO, getting disc hubs is a good idea anyway if there is any chance you may upgrade. I went disc and never wanna go back to rim brakes. My hands are no longer cramped from squeezing the brakes at the end of a long ride. Now I can one-finger my way down steep stuff with excellent control, even with wet brakes. |
