Preride stretching and heart rate????Jason W

Hi everyone. Long time snce I have been here. I was wondering. What and how should I stretch properly before a ride? Most of my rides are bright and early 6-7am in the morning soon asfter I wake up. I have heard of some people doing some pretty painfull damage to there bodys by not stretching. Also I use a heart rate monitor on my bike but have no idea how to utilize it LOL:) I know there is setings for low and high heart rate to have an alarm go off if it gets to low or to high so for me "140LBS 5,9" farly good shape but not to good health "I am a smoker trying to stop" What would my taqrget heart rate be? I understand that may be hard to answer so if not how do I deturmin my target heart rate? Thanks a million in advance. Have fun and watch out for those lions
forget all that crap, stop smoking and ride your bikeclub

I've ridden for 40 years, raced for 15, was a cat II on the track, and never stretched before riding. unlike running, cycling limits your range of motion, just start pedaling easy until yu're firing on all cylinders, then you're good to go.
as a smoker, looking at a heart rate monitor is just gonna depress you because your heart rate guides are pretty much geared toward athletes who are already fit, in your case you might kill yourself trying to keep your heart where it would be for a seasoned cyclist of your age.
If I recall, a real rough max heart rate is like 220 minus your age, but my max was always below that guide. but my resting pulse when I was racing was in the mid 30s, so I guess my whole range was lower. actually, your resting pulse is the thing you should monitor if anything. lower it is, better shape you're in, and if you notice it's up a little over previous, it usually means you're not well rested from previous rides. check it in bed when you first wake up before you start moving.
instead of the monitor, use your eyebugometer. when you're at your anaerobic threshhold, your eyes will feel like they'r gonna pop out. your target heart rate to get in shape should be a pace that still allows you to carry on a conversation without gasping for air. only when you get your wind back is it worth worrying about max heart rate, doing intervals, etc. until then, just ride and enjoy and the fitness will come.

The best thing you can do is stop smoking. After that, just ride. Enjoy being on the bike and enjoy excercising, don't worry if you're in the right "zone." Stretch if you want, it's good for you, but not super important for riding your bike.

.....56 this week, started racing at age 14 and I'll bet I can count on both hands how many times I've stretched before a ride. And I've suffered because of this a grand total of zero times.

Forget the HRM and sell it on ebay. Concentrate hard on getting rid of the butts.
still got your hairnet and ABLA card? I got mine nmclub

i started smoking when i was 12 and i am now 29. i have quit smoking five times never more than 13 months. but now i have quit for over 18 months. and this was the first time i quit that it wasn't a nightmare. i used a medication called zyban and i highly reccomend it. takes the "i NEED a cigarette" feeling away...don't get me wrong; it is still a major pain in the ass to quit but zyban (or welbutrin which is the same thing) made it ALOT easier for me.

I certainly dont have the cycling credentials of the other people who responded to your post, but i do stretch a little bit before a ride. nothing elaborate, maybe just a couple of minutes or so. i think it does help me but thats my thing, i suppose. you wanna stretch? go ahead, no real harm in it. what or how to stretch? sorry, you'll have to do an archive search or something for that as im horrible at instructions/details giving.
on the other hand, i dont keep track of heart rate either, at least electronicly. after a climb, when my chest feels like its going to grenade, i THINK ive reached max rate. ive never smoked (cigarettes, that is)so cant give any advise there but only to say good luck to ya. lets hope you stay at 140 lbs after you quit.

No leg stretching for me.I am a roofer with aging knees .I think the pre stretching tends to make my knees hurt faster so i don't do it. But i do need to stretch my back, neck, shoulders and arms. I do all this while both hands are on the sterring wheel of the car before i get out for my ride. Try it.
