| Winter Maintenance | Goddy Jan 11, 2004 11:37 AM | | What post-ride maintenance should be done after a winter ride? |
| chain | club Jan 11, 2004 6:01 PM | | wipe off the chain and relube it. sometimes I spray on silicone first, wipe that off well, then lube link by link with finish line wet lube.
with rim brakes, check the pads for little pieces of embedded metal from the rims, pick those out before they score the rim
check the rim sidewalls after every wet/snowy/grungy ride, lest your rim be scored badly and a big honking section cracks off on the next ride. nasty conditions is harder on rims
a good waterproof grease in all bearings is good for winter, Phil's or blue boat trailer grease from the auto parts store. |
| Scary, I agree with Club again.... | Bmateo Jan 13, 2004 7:06 AM | | I pretty much agree with Club, except I tend to use Icewax instead of wet lube. I actually carry the finish line wet lube he refers to in my camel back, and if the icewax does not make it through a ride, I apply the FL.
Icewax is awesome, and holds up well except in really muddy conditions. I try to not ride in those conditions, but sometimes on a long ride there are a few unavoidable mud spots or multiple creek crossings.
I also usually try to wipe my bike off, and use as little water as possible.
If I add the wet lube, then I use a chain cleaner filled with simple green, dry it, and reapply the ice wax.
It is all about personal preference and what works good in your area and conditions. See what other locals are doing, ask some questions and then try things out for yourself. |
| Careful with the mud | EveryDaysANewDay Jan 12, 2004 10:45 PM | | If you do get all muddy, hope for a warm day so you can hose your bike off. Lest your hand goes freezing while you try to hose off your ride. |
