Micro drive (36-13, etc.) = chain/ r wheel problems(3 posts)

Micro drive (36-13, etc.) = chain/ r wheel problemsOut of Commition!!!

Oh man. Aside from a cable slipping out of the GTX, aside from my rear wheel being stuck in the drop out on one side, I now see a problem with "micro drive" set ups.

It creates a problem in fine tuning the rear wheel placement. My rear was too short and my manuals where all tough to control and stabilize so I added ONE LINK section to the chain NOW the length is much too long (slot is not long enough to mount) where as before it was almost as short as it could be. I'm useing 36 - 14 gearing. With bigger chain wheels and freewheels I didn't see such dramatic chainges in length.

I don't know about 36-13, but 39-14 gearing yields a slightly shorter than 44-16 chainstay length. I've adjusted my chainlength with 39-14 and had no problems.

If you want something in the middle of your two options, why not try a half-link, available from Dans Comp etc or your local bike store. If you're running 36-13 I'm assuming you're using a cassette hub? Why not try 36-14 or 36-12, you'll have a slightly easier / harder gear but you will be able to fine tune your chainstay length. Cassette cogs arn't expensive, and you local bike store will probably have an old mtb cog you can use to try the gearing and make sure its what you want. Since mtb cogs have shift ramps I wouldn't recomend you using it for long though, then tend to drop your chain and hurt your knees.

As for your other problems, the cable slipping from the GTX is probably the fault of whoever built the bike for you, not having the grub screw tight enough. The axle not sliding easily in the dropout is probably your fault (assuming it moved freely when new), you've probably managed to bend the dropout. Is it the same side as your pegs?

Oh, and with gearing going as low as 25-9 these days, i would hardly call 36-13 "micro drive"
You know what your talking about...half link it isPeteB

I've got the odysey cassette that goes down to 12 or 13 I think. Do you know what tool to use to unscrew the odyssey cassette hub?

I need to get the half link.

My GTX seems to be working fine now. And I pried my drop out open with some wrenches and it's fine. I'm using a 14 36 drivetrain untill I can get my odeyssey setup correct with a half link or change the rear gearing wit the tool I don't have.

I did have an interference problem with the dk pipe bomb chain tensioner between the looly pop and the dropout brace after I slid the wheel back further. And my brake pad adjustment is a bit ghetto because of the wheel being further back.
