help needed for an 8 year old's first BMX experience....namaSSte

My eight year old is absolutely chomping at the bit to get out and try racing BMX. As a confessed bike freak myself, I am really amped to hear this and IM encouraging him as much as possible.
That said, I know next to nothing about BMX'ing (from protocol to bike setup). There's practice next Wednesday night so it will be our first trip to the track and I want to be prepared. Last night I pulled the pegs off his freestyle bike, swapped to lighter aluminum wheels, threw a nice knobby on the front and semi slick with good cornering knobs on the back, new grip with bar plugs then got everything all lubed and tweeked. I guess I am assuming that should get him track ready and if he is into it, we'll start looking at race bikes, full face helmets and riding gear. For Weds., its just longs pants and a LS jersey, gloves and his street helmet.

OK, thats where I am at. What did I miss (Im sure the list is long)? Any advice would be great. Again, even things like track protocol, starting, clothing, tips, etc.

Thanks in advance. Peace and dry dirt!
