JULY 02, 2003 -- PRAGUE, Czech Republic (BRAIN)--Racers ready. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) added two BMX events to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.
The events--one elite men's race and one elite women's race--will replace two track events. IOC president Jacques Rogge said the organization will decide which track events to pull after studying which two are the least popular.
Rogge called BMX "a new, spectacular event." The IOC has recently tried to woo a younger crowd with the addition of other extreme sports such as freestyle snowboarding.
According to cycling's governing body, the Union Cycliste International (UCI), the IOC will use the UCI BMX World Rankings to determine the rankings of each country and how athletes from will compete each country. Those decisions will be made later.
"We believe that this introduction will definitely enhance the Olympic program," Rogge told members of the UCI. |
