Hub Question(9 posts)

Hub QuestionJerms
Oct 21, 2003 12:01 PM
Hi, I have a singlespeed mountain bike (Redline Monocog) but the rear hub spacing is that of a BMX (110mm rather than the MTB 135mm) . . . I am looking to upgrade my wheels and found some old mavic rims in my garage that are 32 hole rims. . .my question is do 32 hole BMX hubs exist? Thanks

I had 32 hole bmx wheels built with King hubs. Certainly not cheap but will last you a lifetime, plus the benefit of many cog sizes.

Any ideas where I could find these?

Thanks

A MUCH less expensive option would be to find an old road hub that accepts a freewheel and adjust the spacing (remove washers, some nuts, etc.) to fit 110 spacing. Your local shop probabaly has several of these lying around that they would love to sell you. Just trim off the excess axle after your done and your set! Should have mentioned this option first.

Thanks for the reply, I definitely thought about doing this but I wanted to see if there were any specifically made 32h bmx hubs out there before I go the home depot route.

I checked bikealog (Comprehensive database) and found no other 32 hole 110 spaced hubs besides Chris King. Not any being made today anyway.

So the Chris King 32 Hole 110mm hub is attainable?

Yes, you can get the King hub in a 32 hole drilling, plus several other options like color, cassette shell material, cog size, etc. But they retail for at least $300 for the rear alone. You will have to special order thru your local shop also, you won't find it mail-order or anywhere online. If it were me, I would have no reservations about building up a wheel with the road hub. There are lots of these around and you could manage to find something realy great too, like a campy or old XT or something of equal quality. For what the King costs, you could buy a whole frameset (Surly 1x1), but you would never have to worry about compatability again.

Good luck. I would like to know which way you end up going.
