Junior Bikes I May Have Missed??(6 posts)

Junior Bikes I May Have Missed??Escrowdog

Okay, since my first post on junior sized 20" bikes over on the "what to buy" board, I have done a little more hunting around. Here's what I've found: DK Nemesis JR, Redline Proline JR, Haro Group 1 SX JR. Please let me know what I've missed and what your thoughts are.

My son is almost 6 years old and probably the size/height of an "average" 7-8 year old. I started him on a 12", he's been on a 16" for a year, now getting too big for it. He really wants to get into some races and I would like him to have something that weight-wise is more in proportion with his size...in other words the 17-18lb bikes look great! He also rides the flatter single track with me too and could really use the taller wheel size to get over stuff better. So far the JR BMX bikes look like the way to go vs. a small mtn. bike with gears...this way he can learn to use the hand brake properly and not have to worry about shifting

Thanks for your input!

My son didn't go to a junior till he was almost eight and a kid he races still rides a mini.Generally the jump is a 2" difference in the top tube.

ironlegs...

I measured him last night, he's 4'1", inseam is 21". Like I said, I want him to be comfortable on it whether he's on a smooth track or a rough trail.

A mini will be good for his size. This is Lil David on his JR. at 8 years old.At the top of the main page is him when he was 5.

Ironlegs,

Very cool! Looks like some fun. At what age did you start the clipless pedals?

I found a local bike shop here in KC that have some mini's and juniors in stock, so I'll take him over there to sit on a few...so he knows EXACTLY what to ask Santa for!

I ride off-road motorcycles too and have been wanting to get him on a little XR...but between mom and I, I think we've decided to wait and let him mature a little more. He rides his bike in front of the house daily and jumps his little ramps I built for him. I think a bigger bike and some BMX racing will get him used to wearing all his gear and focusing....vs. the banzi attitude he has now. :)

Thanks again.

He started with them at 5,but he's not the norm, the only ones that would work for him were the frogs.
