Mini Tires....(5 posts)

Mini Tires....escrowdog
Dec 4, 2003 5:18 PM
I just bought a HARO SX mini for my son for Christmas!! Danscomp.com auction site $200 plus shipping. Hell, I want one for ME now...it's a cool little bike. :))

Anyway, the bike has 1 1/8" tires on it now and I'd like to put on some that are a little fatter for the time being...i.e. riding around the neighborhood and funning on it. Am I correct in assuming the 1 3/8" is the widest in a mini/jr tire? And, are they designated as "mini" or "jr" size tires. I see some on ebay that just say 20 x 1 3/8.

If you can recommend a place online to buy them, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks!

Was I correct on sizing? Like to get something with a little more cush, so he's not dinging up the rims before he gets to hit the track!

Ya know, in looking at this bike, I'm surprised someone hasn't built a little mt. bike off it. A little suspension fork and a rear derailluer...and a HELL of a lot less weight than the junk thats out there now.

Tire's will be 1 3/8.Actually my son rode his in the woods for a while and it was so light it was all over the trail, and the skinny 1 1/8 tires were skidish especially over roots.Of course it didn't bother him he was having so much fun,he never knew the difference.
Ya'll go ride!!!!
That's the way we say it down here.
Have fun!!!!

I was asking this same question directly to several mfgs. and even they couldn't really answer me. The best reply was to "jam a tire in and see if it fits". Geez, thanks for the help! What I did find out is that on most of the 1 1/8" rims, that's all the fork/frame clearance you have so you are kinda stuck with that tire. Personally, I think you might have a little wiggle room but I wound up buying my guy a Redline Expert so that he had some tire options. The top tube is a little longer (19.5") but the geometry makes it seem smaller for some reason. FYI, my son is almost 9 but very short for his age. If you have a last minute change of heart, take a look at the Redline, it comes spec'd w/ 1.75 and 1.50" tires respectively front and rear and still weighs in at around 19 lbs. I got them (I bought two, one for my son and one for my nephew) for $249 @ the LBS.

Another one to consider is the Free Agent Expert. 19" top tube, 18.5 lbs, 1.5" tires f/r with a little more clearance for slightly larger if you wanted.

For me, I knew that the boys would be riding their race bikes around town as well so I wanted something a little more durable (thinking wheels mainly). Sounds like you might be thinking the same. BTW, the Haro SX is a really nice racer for your son. Hope this helps and dosn't cloud the issue further. He's gonna love getting some new wheels. Have a great holiday! Peace.
