Shimano XT Brake OilGCashin

I can't seem to find any Mineral Oil for Shimano XT Brakes where I'm currently living. (I'm from Canada but I'm currently living in a small town in the Netherlands for a few months). Does anyone have any suggestions on where to find it? ALso, will standard DOT brake fluid work in Shimano brakes if I can't get mineral oil? Has anyone tried this???

First thing's first - DO NOT use DOT brake fluid. It will kill the seals in the brakes and probably destroy both the lever body and the caliper. D'oh!

Try the LBS and ask for a Shimano bleed kit. If they don't have it, see if a bike store in Amsterdam or some other large city has it and will send it to you.

The other option is to go to the drug store (chemist?) and get regular mineral oil. Be sure to get light-weight oil, rather than the medium or heavy. It's usually located with the baby stuff - it's basically baby oil.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

I just went through this a few weeks ago. If you really need the fluid right this minute. Get some baby oil from the drug store. Just make sure the ingredients are mostly mineral oil. I used Johnsons and Johnsons Baby Oil. The ingredients were only, Mineral Oil and Fragrance. That will tie you over till you get real fluid. It worked great! I never found Shimano Mineral Oil. BUT. I did get my hands on some Magura Blood. Apparently Magura uses mineral oil in their brakes also. It was easier to find Magura Blood than the Shimano Stuff.
