Who's using full metal jackets?(7 posts)

Who's using full metal jackets?fonseca

Well, I just bought a new fork, and wouldn't you know my front cable/housing is a bit too short. So I'm considering trying the full metal jackets, but I have yet to see any detailed discussion here regarding these. How susceptable are they to tree branches? And if you get a dent in them are you basically screwed? I can't decide wether to try these or just get another set of flak jackets (you can never have too much spare flak jacket housing). They are pretty freaky looking but I have had great results with every other avid product I have used.

have them on a CAAD4 hardtail [single speed too] and have had no trouble w/ foreign object damage or denting. the stainless tubing, while light, appears pretty dent resistant. easy to install as long as you have a tubing cutter [about $5 at home depot]...brake feel w/ avid levers and discs is very direct. been mountain biking since 1986 and have never had brakes that feel like this.
a question. . .fonseca

Do you use standard cable housing for the curved parts? I have not been able to find a picture of a bike using the full metal jackets that was not a closeup of the straight sections...

avid supplies flexible housing w/ the FMJ's for use in the curved sections. also comes w/ a series of close-to-watertight ferruls for mating it all together. the instructions are great and it took about 30 min to do both brakes on the c'dale...since install, no problems of any type but for a small rattle on the front around the headshock bellows where the stainless tube passes through a plastic retainer.
Thanks. Going to try them.fonseca

May as well order a pair. From the picture at jensonusa it looks like they include straight jacket housing, but I could be wrong. May I can use my existing flak jacket housing with it instead, although it might be too large in diameter.
No problems here.JoeR

Much better feel and much tougher than anything else I've tried. I can't keep the Gore's for more than a month or two(they're worthless in wet conditions).

They are no more likely to get caught on a branch etc. than your current housing. The steel tubing is actually 30% lighter than the same lenght of housing.

The other great thing is that the inner wire runs down the middle of the tube when under tension, so there is no friction through those sections.
