Decision to make. HS-33 or Avid SD-7?Merauder
Sep 21, 2001 3:51 AM
I have a decision to make.. I need to upgrade my 4 year old Dia-comp V-brakes. Now I fell in love with the Magura's the moment I saw them. And the thought of owning them appeals to me greatly. But I am a little concerned about maintenance and leakage. And they cost $350. (Cndn) On the other had I can grab some avid sd-7s for about $200 with some nice levers, and save some cash. What is your opinion? Are the Hs-33s that much better? they reliable? I want the maggies but I don't want to get them and be left wondering if I just overkilled. I mainly ride XC.

Thanks

I also run XC (and race) and I won,t use anything else than Maggies (althought I'm currently setting up a set of Louise disks!). Do you absolutely need Maggies? No! Will you have better performance with maggies ? In my oppinion yes!!!

They are a very powerfull, great modulation, lo (to NO) maintenace Brake which is extrêmely reliable! There are also tons of other advantages to running Maggies! For more info, check out the MCM site. You'll learn tons and see why Maggies are so great (and learn of the few drawbacks to using them!)! Go here:

Also, If you're considering buying maggies, I'd go through the states mail order instead of buying here in Canada. It's often quite a bit cheaper, unless you have buddy,s who own bike shops!

If you have any more questions, e.mail me or post them. I (as well as other MCMs) will be glad to help!

Luego!

Speedgoat, supergo, nashbar, wheelworld. I'm not sure if they all hold maggies or not. Speed goat has the best service of the bunch, but not the nest prices!

You'll have to shop around for the best price!

Good luck!

I run maggies on my trials bike, and SD7's on my XC bike. There are a few reasons that I won't run maggies for XC:
They're a massive, massive pain to adjust. It takes me 15 minutes per brake on a good day, and that's with 6 months of practice. V-brakes generally take me less than a minute. If you are going to have a shop take care of that, then you don't have to worry I suppose.
They're heavier, but if you like their feel, then it's not that much of a penalty. I think about 100g per brake.
The modulation is decent but not, in my opinion, as good as SD7's. It's very easy to lock them up, hence their popularity in the trials world. Different pads might solve this, I don't know.
Sooner or later you will break a line. This just happens. Maybe you won't tighten the quick release enough, or you'll kick it open and not notice, and the QR side of the brake will get caught in your spokes, and suddenly there's brake fluid everywhere and you're walking home. And when you get home you get to replace the line and bleed the brakes, which is a nasty, time-consuming job, and it's difficult to do it right without some practice. Slip up just a bit and you've got air in your lines, and your braking performance suffers greatly. Then you have to re-bleed them.
Despite all this I would say that between these two brake choices you can't really go wrong. Maguras are definitely a powerful brake, and they do modulate, and you don't get the annoying feel of a cable stretching when you lay into them with all you've got. Good luck with your choice.
Second vote for SD7sKitKat

I'd say hydraulics is too complicated for most people & if you don't like spending lots of time adjusting brakes it'll be much easier to use v-brakes. SD7s have identical power to my Magura Claras & they don't need adjustment (much). It's also way cheaper (both system & pads)
