| v-brake to disc. convert bike or buy new bike with discs? | endoh Sep 21, 2001 6:22 AM | | i have a 99 fsr with the OEM flexy v-brakes. i love the bike. no problems with the fit or performance. should i get arch rivals (like the guy who posted further down the board) or upgrade to discs or buy a new fsr with discs? btw, i weigh 200# and it can take a bit of effort to stop at times. however, i avoid riding on sloppy trails as a matter of etiquette. thanks in advance. |
| Do you like your bike? | CODMAN Sep 21, 2001 6:45 AM | | I think that is the question! Are you satisfied with your bike as it is? Or are you looking for an excuse to get another!
If you're satisfied, just upgrade your brakes (arch rivals, Maggie rim brakes which people often overlook as a relatively cheap compromise, or disks!). It'll cost less than a new bike!
If you're not satisfied, buy a new one with the brakes you want on it!
It's all up to you and your needs!
Hope this helps!

| Front Disc Rear V | Robert. Sep 21, 2001 7:56 PM | | The most economical choice would be to go for front disc rear V. It works perfect for me. It would probably make the most sense for you. If you are not riding in any wet weather a rear V is more than enough power to lock the rear wheel in most conditions anyway. 70-80+ percent of braking power is at the front wheel.
You can save youre levers by going for some avid mechanical discs. |
| Agree with Robert try a front disc... | næstep Sep 22, 2001 9:42 AM | | If you're already taxing your Vs like I was, a front disc will provide noticable improvement. I'm 235 and have been perfectly happy on a disc/V combo for over a year. I don't ride a lot of wet stuff. If it suits you, stick with it. If not, it's a stepping stone to a full disc setup.
You can do the complete upgrade for less than $150 if you shop around for an Avid Mech and a decent pre-built wheel.
