Avid Mechanical brake squeal(7 posts)

Avid Mechanical brake squealL7

I set up an avid CPS disc on the front end of my ride two days ago, and am finding that as it beds in, the squeal gets worse and worse. They only make any noise when I put a lot of pressure on them, but when they do it's loud and grating. Anyone have any advice? Will this go away as they continue to break in? Should I get new pads? Thanks-
Nick

...as they break in.

I would try readjusting the caliper (the CPS adjustment). Sometimes it shifts a bit on a new installation.

If that does not help we can try some other things.

BTW what fork are you using?

after reading a bunch of the archived posts on the squeal issue, i expected the break-in squeal but i have to say that all three sets of avid mechanicals have been dead quiet from the outset. still are quiet regardless of the abuse i heap upon them...what did i do right here?
Getting better as it beds inL7

It's now been almost a week and the squeal has just about disappeared. I have brushed the rotor with my fingers accidentally a few times, nothing serious but I think I'm going to try heating the pads and cleaning the rotor with alcohol, and just see if performance is improved. I've heard you can heat the pads on an electric stove- is the smell unbearable? Anyone tried it? By the way Shiggy, the fork is a 2001 manitou SX-R, and I love it to death, but that's for another forum I suppose. Thanks for your help everybody-
Nick

I had that problem, what Dougal told me to do was burn'em. Heated it up with a propane torch, let it cool off and install and readjust the CPS caliper and the only squealing should be when dust get on the rotor. Check the hold the caliper mount after couple of rides. My back caliper mount came loose on a rutty downhill only one screw was holding on but that Avid Caliper kept braking all the way down. That thing was covered with mud and still working even the front. Great Avid Disc brake Highly recommend it. Don't forget to loctite(Blue) those screws that hold the mount though.
What did you heat with the torch?shiggy©
