Adding V-Brakes to older bike(4 posts)

Adding V-Brakes to older bikeBriny

I have a 1996 Kona AA that has Curve catilever brakes and levers. I'd like to upgrade to v-brakes and levers (Avid or Shimano). What issues will I have to address? Or is it as simple as buying and installing.

Thanks,

Brian

To upgrade to V's from center-pull cantilevers, you will just have to buy new brakes as well as V Brake levers. One possible issue comes to mind. Some older frames that use the center-pulls don't have a cable stop which allows housing to be run from the top tube to the 'noodle'. When I upgraded my bike a long time ago, I bought this adapter that just clamps on the top tube.

is the distance of the brake mounting posts. For v-brakes, I beleive they should be 80mm, some older canti-frames may be closer and this is not recommended for v's.
But, Avid V's come with shims to fix the spacing problem (nm)Justin
