xt or avid(7 posts)

xt or avidReinbag

On my bike (stumpjumper, xc) I have avid 10's with avid 1.9 levers for brakes. If I upgrade, should I upgrade to a higher quality avid or an xt. I can get an xt (pair) for about 30 bucks, so I figure that is a good deal. (it's an xt with xtr pads), but is the xt not even worth that?

its not really worth it.

The avid brakes are incredible, but if you want to upgrade, upgrade to avid mechanical disc brakes. They are cheap have as great stopping
(compares with hydraulics) and are easy to maintain.

GO AVID!!!!!!

I think he's talking about Avid Vees and XT vees.

In which case go avid. I suggest Arch Rivals or SD7's they are every bit as powerful, if not more powerful than XTR's, and they don't squeal or eat rims.

Yeah, I heard that the xt/xtr v-brakes ate rims, that's why I imeadiatly didn't get the 30 dollar pair of xt's with xtr pads.

Actually, it's the pads that eat the rim. If you use avid brake pads you accomplish the same thing. XT's tend to squeal alot, especially on the front, when wet. Even if you toe in or out or otherwise...

Xtr's are great brakes, the pads blow... My wife's bike came with avid 5's and they were really nice... I suspect the higher models are very good.

My hardtail had XT brakes F and R and they were adequate. Pads were horrible, noisy, and ate up my sidewalls. To quiet the XTs I installed WTB dual compound pads, huge difference, and more stopping power too. I recently built a FS and installed Avid SD Ti's on it, they are pretty awesome. I am now solidly in Avids' corner. I dont think you would go wrong with either brake, but IMO the Avid is a better product.

I just replaced my Magura Clara discs with a set of Avid SD7s. They rock. Braking power is excellent & so is modulation. Maintenance is heaps easier than with a disc. & yes XT brakes squeal a lot & parallel push takes more maintenance.
