Rubber band spokes! Yes! Actually, it would probably be safe because Ti has a horribly long fatigue life and is very strong. I recall Mountain Bike magazine comparing the DT Swiss 14g Ti MMC spokes to Alpine III's in terms of strength. Alpine's, if you don't know, are designed for DH and tandem use.

BUT! Ti is flexy. Your bike will wobble to and fro and all around. Icky. My vote says stick with steel spokes and get a REALLY light hubset.

I've been riding ti spoked wheels for 2 years now. Incredibly light and surprisingly durable given my 200lbs. BUT, they do flex a lot. I attribute a couple nasty crashes I had this year to the very flexy front wheel (affect steering precision and overall rigidity). I just installed a Maggie Louise on the front and went with a more rigid wheel I got from B4me. Made for a much more confidence inspiring setup. After riding ti spokes w/rim brakes for 2 years I wouldn't recommend this for a disks.
