| Help-XTRs Kill'in my rims!!! | DSripper Sep 23, 2001 7:06 PM | | I've been borrowing a friend's bike for a couple weeks and it's fiited with XTR v-brakes and Mavic 517 rims. The rimes are almost brand new and the brakes are still pretty new (almost time to replace pads). Whenever I apply the brakes with any force I get this terrible scraping sound. Upon further investigation it appears to be bits of metal embedded in the pads. It's happened more than once--I think the pads are destroying the rims and the metal of the braking surface is getting caught in them. What's up? The pads are not ceramic and not overly worn. |
| That's Shimano fer ya... | melanthius Sep 24, 2001 7:41 PM | | ... that whole "chunks of my rim in the pads" buisness has been around for a while. Shimano makes some decent brakes, but they can't formulate a pad compound worth crud. Just get KoolStop pad inserts, they last longer, grip better, and don't tear up your rims.
