Help—-XTRs Kill'in my rims!!!DSripper
Sep 23, 2001 7:06 PM
I've been borrowing a friend's bike for a couple weeks and it's fiited with XTR v-brakes and Mavic 517 rims. The rimes are almost brand new and the brakes are still pretty new (almost time to replace pads). Whenever I apply the brakes with any force I get this terrible scraping sound. Upon further investigation it appears to be bits of metal embedded in the pads. It's happened more than once--I think the pads are destroying the rims and the metal of the braking surface is getting caught in them. What's up? The pads are not ceramic and not overly worn.
That's Shimano fer ya...melanthius

... that whole "chunks of my rim in the pads" buisness has been around for a while. Shimano makes some decent brakes, but they can't formulate a pad compound worth crud. Just get KoolStop pad inserts, they last longer, grip better, and don't tear up your rims.
