| Ti rotors...long term use??? | rib-eye Sep 24, 2001 8:34 AM | | Any one have long term experience with ti rotors? I got a couple for my Maggie Louise but delayed installing after hearing a few months ago of a couple of poor wear. |

I know Tim in Wi used Ti rotors for some time with his Louise's, he liked them, but he also said that he never got to use them on really long DH runs. If you are just using them for normal XC riding then you will probably be just fine, but for Freeriding or DH you may not want to use them. Ti does not dissipate heat as well as stainless, so on long DH runs you risk the chance of cooking the oil out of your system. I think someone also said something about Ti flaking when it gets really hot (someone correct me on this if I am wrong). If I were to use any pads I would suggest the endurance pads that come with Louise's, not the performance ones as they don't last as long. If you put them on let us know how well they work. | More Info. | Tim in Wi Sep 25, 2001 7:25 PM | | Yes, I have used them with 2001 Louises, but only in WI and they were fine. I also have used Ti rotors on Formula B4, and damn, that is a noisy combo, and the pads wore fast. I just bought a 2000 front Louise for my Sugar 1, and am putting a Ti rotor on it. I think they work fine with Magura, and Hope too (I know a few guys with them on Hope). Bad combos are Formula B4, Shimano XT (Stan of Tubeless fame has used them with XT, only to say they squeal a lot, but work fine). Hayes is actually coming out with a new brake called the Mag/Ti which has Magnesium bodies, Ti hardware, and TI ROTORS! They seem to have a new pad compound for it. They are actually using the exact same rotors I sell, and they are squeal-free. I actually saw a Santa Cruz female rider using one prototype set at the Mt Snow NORBA National, and they appeared to work just like normal ones for her. As for Ti losing a top layer, that is true. The reason bearings and races are not made from Ti is that if you rub it enough, the top layer will begin to lift off. however that is when Ti is rubbing Ti. In disc brake mode, they will not lose any surface material because Ti is harder than the pad material. Hope that helps. Also, if you want Ti-specific pads for different brakes, consult a Euro company called A2Z which also sells the same Ti rotors I do, and they have EBC made pads that are matched to Ti rotors.

| Good Info. | Pat T.® Sep 25, 2001 8:36 PM | | Maybe with all the Ti stuff popping up the big guys will start making some Ti sets too. I believe Maguras limiting factor on the Ti rotors was they couldn't find a pad compound that they felt gave good enough performance, but now that EBC has them it shouldn't be long. |
