Question for the NADS regarding rotors...(7 posts)

Question for the NADS regarding rotors...L7
Sep 24, 2001 4:52 PM
Two questions.. first of all, will a Hayes 6" rotor work with the CPS caliper? And if so.. I have seen adapters for converting 6" calipers to work with 8" rotors, and was wondering if a similar setup could be contrived with a CPS caliper and another company's 8" rotor. (most likely Hayes). This is in regards to a front brake on a manitou mount. And one more question while I'm here.. could the CPS adapter that converts the 74mm mount to a 51mm mount be used with any disc caliper? Thanks everybody-
Nick

You have to check the size on the rotor compared to the offset of the 8" adapter. You would have to use a Hayes adapter. I don't really see why it couldn't be done.....get the measurements on the Hayes adapter, and see if there's a possibilty of it interfering with the actuating arm on the Avid caliper. I know the standard Hayes to IS adapters don't work on Avids, without some filing. While on THAT note, yeah, you can use the CPS adapter on Hayes brakes, no worries.....aside from Avid, they're the only ones that use the post mount. You CAN'T (or are strongly advised not to) use any 74mm post/51mm IS adapter on calipers that are different for each application (i.e. Magura, Shimano, Grimeca). These brakes come in either mount, the post mount needing a larger adapter, in Shimano's case, a 170mm for the post mount compared to a 160mm for IS mount. Adding an adapter to this would put the caliper too far out to grab the rotor properly. Same is true of Magura.

p.s. there IS a rumor that you can use a REAR Avid adapter on the front brake (with IS tabs) to mount an 8" caliper, but I've never experimented, I run Manitou forks.

Oh, wait... here it is... not sure if this is the same setup as yours, but maybe it'll help... check it out.

I'm running a Hays 8" rotor on the front of my Cannondale with an Avid caliper. I put a .900" spacer between the caliper and the IS adapter that comes with the brakes. I'v had this setup for over 1500 miles with no problems. An 8" rotor is 203mm not 185mm.

Are you using an 8" Hayes 4 bolt rotor on a Coda hub?

Jason

I am using a Shimano XT hub with a 6 bolt rotor. My Cannondale didn't come with disc brakes.
