| EXPERIENCED HELP REQUIRED WITH DISK BRAKES... | Gookie Sep 25, 2001 5:09 PM | | I just purchaced a "Directional Design" Shimano Deore disk hub and wheel along with a set of Avid Mechanicals... I installed everything, was going great, then I decided to spin the wheel to see if the rotor was true... Well, it was LATERALLY true, but it MOVED up and down... So, I'm like, "what the hell??"...
After disassembling and re-assembling about 5 times, I began to notice the high spot was always in the same place no matter how I turned the rotor on the hub... I then measured the distance of the centers of the screw holes to the hub body... 2 holes are further out than others...
My real question is, is it NORMAL for a rotor to vary up and down (I really don't think so, and I seriously hope not)... I just wondered if anyone else has had this problem ever, with any type of hub? |
| Is it hitting your caliper? | Pat T.® Sep 25, 2001 5:30 PM | | If not then I would not worry about it, it should not affect your braking. If it is hitting your caliper, then you have two choices. Get a new hub, or file the rotor edges until it does not hit the caliper. Pat T.® MCM #69, MSPS #003 |
| nah, it's not normal..... | heff® Sep 25, 2001 5:50 PM | | the holes should be the same distance apart all the way around. Personally, being the @nal retentive guy that I am, I would get the hub (or wheelset) exchanged for one that's drilled properly. But, like Pat Tea said, if it's not hitting the caliper, it's not critical.

| thanks for the quick response... | Gookie Sep 25, 2001 6:12 PM | | No, it's not hitting the caliper, but I'm pissed off... It took longer for this shitty hub to come in than expected in the first place, and now it's well, shitty! I'm taking it back tomorrow, when the rotor 'hops' up not all of the pad will be in contact with the rotor, and I wont have full braking preformance on that spot...
It's a new "Directional Design" Shimano Deore hub... If I can't get one with holes drilled correctly (which I'm kinda anticipating...) any suggestions on other good hubs? |
| DT/Hugi's | Pat T.® Sep 25, 2001 6:19 PM | | Very nice hubs, I have one on the back (though mine says Magura Pro on it). I don't have any experience with any other hubs except for Kings and SRAMs.... Kings are very sweet, very pricey. SRAMs are damn nice, I have one on the front, smoother than my Kings. It really depends on what you are willing to spend, and how long you want to wait. |
| re: EXPERIENCED HELP REQUIRED WITH DISK BRAKES... | Kudzu Kannibal Sep 26, 2001 4:02 AM | | It's not normal, POINT ENDED. Brakes are very important and symmetry dictates your wear over time or they would have half-ass designed the things. I work on my car, trust me.
I would not think it would be a bad thing and it may not be, but feel your disc after you ride it...mine is usually warm (sometimes hot) and I assume yours will be to.
You will get uneven wear and may find yourself warping the rotor. Yep, sounds insane, but if you do intense downhills and get that thing heated to where you can fry an egg on it and the pads are contacting in an elliptical fashion, your pads will wear unevenly and you may have rotor problems (and THAT costs money).
They design those things like they do for a reason by Engineers who understand the science of mechanics. Remember Disc Brakes started out for Downhillers, now all of us are using them.
Just an opinion from a guy who works on his bike and car(s). Go to where you got it or a local shop and ask for help. Your brakes are very valuable real estate on your bike...And as an ANAL person, I to, would not be happy!

| Took it back... | Gookie Sep 26, 2001 11:15 AM | | Took the wheel back today... Showed the guys at the LBS how screwed the hub was... They said they'd never seen anything like it before... They had an identical hub in the store, put my rotor on it, spun it in a truing stand and this time the rotor was perfectly true... So, my new wheel is coming in tomorrow... Hopefully I have better luck with this one... |
| Good deal | Pat T.® Sep 26, 2001 9:46 PM | | Glad they got you all fixed up. :o) Pat T.® MCM #69, MSPS #003 |
