Problem with Hayes Disc brake(4 posts)

Problem with Hayes Disc brakealcooper

I'm having a problem with my front Hayes hydraulic disc brake. After about 10-20 minutes of use, the brake begins to drag. The drags keeps gettig worse until the bike cannot be ridden. If I stop riding the brake will gradually release over a 5-10 minute period. The problem seems to be related to heat, has anyone seen this problem before?

Thanks
Al

you probably have too much fluid in the reservoir. Take out a little like you were bleeding the system.
this is what happens....Geof

Brake fluid in any hydraulic system is going to expand with heat. Be sure your brake pistons are FULLY compressed into the caliper BEFORE you bleed the brake. This reduces the chance of too much expansion sqeezing your pads to the point of drag.

You've either got air, water or too much fluid in the system.

Air expands when heated, making the brake really mushy and pump up. Water lowers the boiling point of the fluid, causing the same problem as air but with brake fluid vapour (happens at higher temperatures).

Too much brake fluid means the bladder can't do it's job and take up the expanding fluid. You might be able to force the pistons back in, there's a small overflow hole on the bar side of your lever which fluid will come out. Otherwise try a new bleed but push the pistons back in first.
