| Avid Mechanical on '98 Super V rear frame?... | Wierzyman Sep 25, 2001 6:10 PM | | I would like to put a Avid Mechanical Disk Brake on the rear of my Cannonadale Super V, 1998 model The frame mount is standard, but my LBS said I might have a problem due to rotor size. Cannondale was original built with 4" rotors and the Avid is 5" or 6" They weren't sure it would work Anyone out there have or try this combo or any other disk combo on the rear of a 98 Super V? Thanks |
| re: Avid Mechanical on '98 Super V rear frame?... | Joe Dawson Sep 25, 2001 7:00 PM | | I have an Avid disc brake on the back of my 98 Super V. The bike shop is partially right. In 98 Cannondale had the disc mount on the first production run about 1/4" closer to the axle than the later models that conformed to the international standard. You need to measure your mount to see which one you have. What I did was measure from one of the mounting holes for the caliper to the botttom of the dropout. Then I went to the bike store and measured a new bike with disc brakes in the same way. If your measurements are the same then you have the updated mounts. I have a friend who had the earlier mounts and his measurements were .250" smaller. Cannondale made a disc that would work with this mount. Even with the right mount you will probably have to use some spacers between tha IS mounts and the frame to get the caliper to line up with the rotor laterally. My bike came with no disc mounts on the swingarm. I called Cannondale and they changed out my swingarm free of charge with a new one with mounting tabs. |
| i need the same info you do... | allen Sep 26, 2001 6:02 AM | | i have a 2000 jeckyll and wanna go avid mech front and rear
my stock expert hydros were great initially but have become very problematic
we have a few problems that need to be solved
one is the four bolt rotor on our coda disc hubs (do you have these?)
i've been told that we can use a four bolt patterrn made by hayes or hope but that it will void the warranty if we do
any specific details on how to set this up would be appreciated
thanx |
| i need the same info you do... | Joe Dawson Sep 26, 2001 6:37 AM | | I have XT 6 bolt hubs so I don't have the rotor issue. However I do have a Hayes 8" rotor on the front of my bike and it works with no problems. I think that Avid uses 165mm rotors so any 4 bolt 165mm rotor that is close to the same thickness should work as long as the 4 bolt pattern is the same as the Coda. If It was my bike I would buy a rotor to fit and not worry about the warranty issue. |
| i need the same info you do... | jim catterson Sep 26, 2001 9:22 AM | | i posed this question to paul at avid and he says that the hayes 4 bolt rotors won't work w/ the avids regardless of the warranty issue. he did not say why. he also said that he was trying to work out a solution w/ c'dale but i haven't heard back from him yet...for the status of the 6 bolt lefty hubs, check down the board a bit for a bunch o' posts on this issue... |
| i have the solution, although it not immediate... | allen Sep 26, 2001 3:19 PM | | just recieved this email from avid tech (Dan) about using mech disc with cannodales and their four bolt rotor hubs:
With the current 01 disc you cannot use that rotor. We use a 165mm that's a 160. You ought to wait til next year, we will move to the 160 mm standard and you'll be able to use your old rotors.
i also asked him about weight of the new system:
The weight is really yet to be seen on this new disc as it's just entering production. |
