Avid mechanical squeak in cold...(7 posts)

Avid mechanical squeak in cold...Wierzyman
Jan 8, 2002 9:28 AM
My Avid mechanicals have been great. Rain, mud, cold have not been a problem. Today was my first snow ride. 1 to 2 inches of the white stuff and temps in the mid 20's My Avid disc rear was howling bad. My V-brake up front was squealing a bit too, but not as bad. Anyone else have this happen? On another note. With my V-brakes, if I clean the rim and the pad with a scotchbrite and Pedro's bike cleaner/degreaser, my brakes squeal like mad for at least 20 to 30 miles. After that they are fine. What gives? The pads are the red compound of the one that everyone here seems to recommend (Damned if I can remember the name now) Thanks in advance

......keeps the rotors and pads cooler than in warmer, wet riding. Couple that with the fact that water and mud are warmer than snow, and you'll get squealing. Every disk brake does it. Last winter, the group I was riding with ran the gamut from Avids to Hayes to Shimano, and I think one set of Hopes. We sounded like a pack of horny dogs when we got to a stop. You can try the Avid UCP pads, or get a set of the red EBC pads (they're making them for Avids now), and that might help.

As far as your V's, don't use the Pedros on the rims. Just use the Scotchbrite pad and clean water. The degreaser is leaving a bit of a film on your rim that's causing your pads to skip along the rim until it wears off. If the rims have ALOT of crap on them, use isopropyl alcohol to clean the residue off, then scotchbrite them again. Don't use a degreaser or any other "cleaning" chemical on them.

I will try that the next time I have the bike up for a good cleaning. Where can I get the replacement pads for the Avid online?
Speedgoat has them.........heff®

wish I could. My Avids squeal as well. I've used stock (ACP) pads and now use UCP. They're mighty loud.
EBC greens stopped squeal for mederby

but they aren't quite as powerful as the stock Avid pads I had before, but almost.
