At interbike they were pretty bad. You would HOPE that the products at interbike were set up correctly for the most part, in fact the whole point of interbike is to impress us with each years products. Anyway to get a good feel I rode 6" hayes, 8" hayes, HMX and the Avids. I tried out more than one bike with the avids though. The HMX took two fingers for me to develop the kind of power that I could use to control the bike. With one finger it was not there, in other words it there was excessive lever pull to get good power. While I don't like the feel of Hayes, the 6 and 8" were much better brakes, while I couldn't adapt right away to their modulation, I could feel plenty of power with one finger. The Avids on the other hand felt closer to a magura, with lots of power. Magura has a distinct lever feel, they usually know how to get great modulation. The avid is the same way, its not on and off. The HMX is not on and off either, but it is not nearly as good as the avid.

Don't want to sound like a plug for the avids too much, but that was what I was readily comparing it too. While I would use the avid over or in place of other hydraulic systems, I would in no way use the Hayes HMX over a hydraulic brake. This is just based on what I felt from the HMX at interbike compared to other brakes.
should add thatJm

the hayes felt "mushy", there was pad engagement pretty quickly, but it took considerable lever travel before it developed the power, the power it developed at that point was not bad I guess, but when you have to use excessive lever travel(fighting cables there's a lot of resistance) it takes a lot out of your hand to brake effectively. This is what I am trying to convey. Does it develope good power at that point? I don't really remember that good, I know that with the avid you could get the same effect or better with one finger with much less "effort".

There was a post about 3-4 months ago from a rider who had ridden both. He said the HMX-1's and the Avids were easily the 2 mechanical discs in a class by themselves. He preferred the easy setup of the Avids and thought the HMX-1's performed slightly better than the Avids.
Whether they're better than the Avids, I don't know. Are they any good? Yes. I assume you're asking cuz you have an opportunity to score a pair cheap.
um, you know they are good?Jm

I've had short rides on each but I haven't been able to ride both brakes with identical levers. Until I can it's pretty hard to make a power call on the comparison.
You can say that either will pissbowl any set of V's for power, modulation and control in all weather.
