| paging Heff - EBC's for Avid Mechanical | LocoToo Jan 9, 2002 9:46 AM | | What's your experience with EBC pads for Avid Mechanicals? If given a choice between one of the EBC's or the stock Avid pad which would you choose and why? I live and ride in the Northeast (you know how variable the conditions can be). |
| dunno....... | heff® Jan 9, 2002 5:46 PM | | ....I've been happy with the UCP pads I got from Avid, so I haven't tried the EBC's yet. When I get my brakes back from Mike T in the springtime, I'll probably get some.
With EBC's stuff, you can pretty much listen to any other brake user as far as improvements, the compounds don't change from brake to brake. Red pads seem to be the favorite among Hayes users, so that's the one I'd try first.
Let me know how they work out, if you do.

| I have the new "springed" pads...... | jdcamb Jan 9, 2002 6:33 PM | | And so far they work awesome. Firstly they are really quiet. No more pinging and wet or dry they haven't made a peep. Most importantly they work as good as the UCP's. They kind of get the same shiny glaze on them as the UCP's too. They come with a copper colored back plate. At first I kind of laughed at the little clip that is the spring. But after I put them in they were awesome after the first ride......jdcamb |
| dunno....... | Dougal Jan 9, 2002 9:22 PM | | I think the red is the grippiest but also fastest wearing compound.
Green is their all round compound (used to be stock Hope pads) and gold were metallic sintered for racing only pads.
Hayes seem to wear out the red pads pretty quick, stock Hayes pads last for years and red EBC lasted for months on one of my mates bikes.

| I have the EBC golds on the front | shiggy©® Jan 10, 2002 9:57 AM | | They have taken quite a while to bed in but they are now strong and consistant. I think the UCPs have more out right grip.
I have been riding the EBCs in the wet and they are quiet except for last night when it was fairly dry then instead of the soft, popping whir it had a almost stick-in-the-spokes sound.
I am going to take a set of UCPs on a few rides so I can do some back to back testing. |
| EBC greens report | derby Jan 10, 2002 3:12 PM | | The EBC greens have completely cured the squeak and howls I used to get with the Avid (gold backed) pads that came stock. Quiet even after long very hard braking till they smelled nasty from burning, but no fade. Quiet in the wet too. They are quiet. But they aren't quite as powerful as the stock Avid pads were. Still one finger in the dry for most situations but they do take a little more effort than the stock Avid pads, so two fingers are more useful for very long hard braking or in the rain. And they seem to be wearing a bit faster, needing to dial the adjuster more often, especially the rear in the wet. And they do have a dull card in the spokes sound that can be heard when riding on the street. - ray |
| EBC greens report | sparticus Jan 10, 2002 3:40 PM | | I tried EBC greens in my Hayes hydraulics a couple of summers ago. They were fine during the dry months (good stopping power, quieter than Hayes' stock pads) but as soon as the rains came the EBC greens howled and the power went away. I put the stock Hayes pads back in and after using them for a couple of rides wondered why I ever thought about changing. The Hayes hydraulic discs with stock pads are the most consistant brake (wet vs. dry) I've used. Avids are good but Hayes are better (more consistant) when the wet weather hits.
