I just purchased a scruz s-light from colorado cyclist. I have a problem with the front brake. First problem is that the brake will not "brake" properly, There is no grab. The lever does not bottom out but it is close. Also when I brake it makes an extremely loud squeaking noise, I am sure some of you know the sound. I had a LBS bleed the front and the guy buffed the pads, it still makes noise and does not brake. I spoke to CC and I was told to run the break pads over a flame for about 5 seconds and to clean the rotor with some isopropyl alcohol. What do you guys think is the problem? Also do you think this will work? Should I have them send me new pads? Any help is appreciated.
Cheers,
Patrick

XT's take a bit to break in. Got a good long road you can ride down? I did that, holding a little pressure on the levers so the brakes were dragging a bit and they were good to go after that.

The XT's are not extremely powerful with the 6" rotors anyways, so don't expect that kind of power. An 8" rotor will make your day if you need to do that. I did and it rocks.

Obviously the XT's aren't designed for Downhill, but then again, neither is the Superlight. I've taken my bike, only front disc (XT) on some downhills, and it's enough power I'd ever need. I weigh 180 with gear, and I can endo on flat ground without shifting my weight. That's enough power for me! (although I don't think I ever tried that with my V's and Maggies)
PS...not suggestting you try this, but I got oil on my pads and know quite well the sound you are talking about. My wife drove the car while I held my bike out the window holding the front brake. Over 20KpH and the bike started to wobble. She kept it around 20, and after about 2km's, they quit squealing. But that's just me. I'm a Reverend in the Universal Life Church, so I can do these things. I deem them 'Right'.

Pat,
Junk the stock pads and get either fibrax or EBC pads(red or green). I had the same problem as you, as the stock pads glaze over very easy and loose thier power. When I changed to the fibrax pads (from Jenson USA) I had much better performance. With gear I weigh around 240, and my XT's with a 6" rotor will put me over the bars with ease if I grab a hand-full of brake!! A set of pads should run you about $36 front and rear, and last a long time (but that can vary with your location, ect). If you need any more help, email me.
