Here is what Avid had to say about replacing my original pads and an update on their 8" rotor.

-----original reply from Avid-----
Hi Christopher,
I will send two sets of pads with spring clips.
We will have an 8" rotor in the near future, watch the website for updates.
Due to the fact that the '01 Avid disc is designed for a non-standard 165mm rotor, you may not mount an 8" as you'd be 5mm off even with an adapter.
Regards,
Dan

1. I have read many different posts on MTBr regarding new pads for these brakes that have a spring to prevent the noisy rattle heard while riding on rough terrain. What do I have to do to get two sets: front and rear? (Sales receipt for my brakes attached so you don't think I'm trying to get some pads just for the heck of it.)

2. Rumor has it that you are coming out with an 8" rotor/adapter for these brakes. What's the true answer to this?

3. In the interim, I have also heard an 8" rotor can be used on the front as long as you use the rear IS adapter to move the caliper away from the fork. Have you heard of or tried this?

Thanks for your support and understanding.

...though the new rotors are 5mm smaller, the difference at the caliper is half that - 2.5mm. That should be small enough for the older calipers to work with the larger rotors even if Avid can not approve it.

I don't know how this dumb rumour started but here's the truth.

YOU CANNOT MOUNT AN 8 INCH ROTOR BY USING A REAR ADAPTOR!!!!!

Front to rear adaptors vary by 10mm in radius, 20mm in diameter. So using a rear adaptor will let you use a 185mm rotor on the front. Not an 8 inch 205mm rotor.

...soon to release factory kits to use 185mm and 205mm rotors. That is what the above post is about.
