| Avid mechanical brakes squelling under braking! | XMXER Jan 13, 2002 5:30 PM | | I have a 2 week old set of Avid mechanicals and they started squelling under braking today. It was a little wet but they have been real quiet until today. Please help if you have experienced this or if you know the answer. Thanks! |
| First time riding in wet conditions? | heff® Jan 13, 2002 7:38 PM | | You can change the pads out for the UCP (Ugly Conditions Pads), but you'll still get a bit of noise when you ride through a creek or puddle, it just goes away faster. All disk brakes squeal when wet, some just do it more than others. My Avids have been relatively silent, but I also have a big, heavy interface between the rotor and caliper, so I don't get the same vibration as a lighter setup.
They'll never be totally silent. Not even Hayes can claim that.

| squeal? more like a honking sound i'd say... | Nonny Jan 13, 2002 8:13 PM | | ...last few soggy rides i was pretty i was hearing the mating cry of a lonely (and horny) goose... except that it was coming from my avid discs (not too sure just what that says about the sexual orientation of my voodoo...).
=)
Mildly annoying, but compared to my girlfriend's Hope Mini's it's hardly something i feel any need to do something about.
Non. (honk honk) |
| moose? orientation of your bakka? | someguy1 Jan 13, 2002 9:56 PM | | i hate to say it nonny, but i'm more worried about your sexual orientation seeing as how you have intimate knowledge of what a mating moose sounds like.
happy trails nonny,
someguy1 (thinks his wet brakes sound more like a 5'8" brunette with a red halter top) |
| me 2 | makalu Jan 14, 2002 8:03 AM | | Hi Xmxer,
I was going to post the same exact question you did.
I have been riding my Avid's since October.
On Saturday, I went for my very fist ride in the snow. It varied between 1/2" and 3" of the white stuff, and my front rotor got very wet.
TO say the brakes squealed is an understatement. I think my braking woke up the dead!!!
The rear brake didn't make a sound, it was only the front brake set.
THis was the first time they got wet. Up until Saturday, my rides have been dry, and the brakes have been silent.
I tuned up my brakes and dialed em in perfectly, and now they make no noise (other then when wet that is). When I got the bike, the brakes were slapped together and not put together correctly at all.
I guess we will just have to live with the almost unbearable squealing in return for the AMAZING braking power. |
| What fork are you riding? | heff® Jan 14, 2002 8:44 AM | | Let me know, I might have a couple of solutions for ya.

| fork | makalu Jan 14, 2002 9:11 AM | | Hi Heff,
My rig is a 2002 Giant Rainier.
The fork is a 2002 Marzocchi EXR with 3" travel.
I assumed the only remedy was to dry off the rotor with a rag.
What ideas do you have???
Thank-you much |
| uh huh............. | heff® Jan 14, 2002 1:33 PM | | ........the problem (such as it is) is with your fork. Marzocchis are pretty famous for sounding like "tuning forks" with disk brakes. If you look at the underside of your fork, at the bottoms of the legs, you'll see that they're hollow, and part of the disk tab is on this hollow section. The easiest way to fix this problem is to fill the underside of the fork legs with foam. This'll deaden the vibration that's causing your brakes to sing.

| ah-ha | makalu Jan 14, 2002 1:55 PM | | From memory, I believe you are correct that the underside of the fork is hollow.
Interesting, I would have never thought of that.
I am sure the brakes will still squeal, but possibly, not as much. I guess the squeal is entering the hollowed out fork portion, and reverberated and growing in its "squealness" hahhaha.
I shall try your foam method.
Thank-you much |
