| XT V-brake problems. my symptoms are: | rich-ca Jan 14, 2002 12:22 PM | | My problem is with my rear brake. After releasing my brake lever, either the brake lever and/or brake arms fail to return to their normal positions. Thus resulting in the brake pads rubbing agianst my rim. I have to physically either push the lever back with my fingers or spread the V-brake arms apart with my hand. Upon doing so I hear a "click" and the problem is solved. I've already cleaned and lubed my cable. Can my cable housing be causing this? I don't think the problem is in the lever itself because when I removed the cable the lever felt "normal". Thanks for any and all help. |

If it moves smoothly, probably not cable housing. Look at adjustment screws closely, make sure they are seated against spring return. Look closely and make sure pin on brake is inside it's hole in frame. If one wasn't seated in the hole or popped out it will cause problems you describe, also. Some frames have more than one pin hole. Try one that increases tension more. Also, if cable is frayed, it will cause what you are experiencing. |
| pad lip | PBK Jan 15, 2002 5:49 AM | | If your pads are worn they could have developed a lip that can get stuck under the edge of the rim. Take of your pads, file them down so the surface is even and reinstall. (Or get new ones.)
Also check that both return springs are whole, unbent and seated correctly. |

| Thanks guys. One more thing.... | rich-ca Jan 15, 2002 1:49 PM | | "return spring"? How do I get at it? I was hoping to avoid opening things up. Thanks again. |
| Thanks guys. One more thing.... | gary Jan 15, 2002 3:08 PM | | You don't have to open anything up. The return spring is the long wire on back side that pivots and hooks on the top of the brake, behind a small catch. That is the return spring and should have some tension on it when you hook everything up correctly. |
| Does it make a difference if.... | rich-ca Jan 16, 2002 10:04 AM | | I have the shifter/brake combo? I'm at a loss right now. I'll check the return spring tonight. I tried to last night, but at first glance everything seemed ok. It's not "pad lip". The whole system (lever, cable, and arms) feels sticky. I've already removed the cable and gave it a good clean and lube. I'm interested in finding this "return spring"...... Looking at the brake from underneath, is it visible all the time or do I have to squeeze my lever to access it? Thanks. |
| Does it make a difference if.... | gary Jan 16, 2002 4:34 PM | | You are looking in wrong place. The return spring I am talking about is the one mounted on your brake arm, nothing to do with shifter/brake combo on your bar. This spring is black in color and looks like a piece of coathanger on the back of your brake-arm. Brakearms, to be clear, are the pieces that mount to the frame pulled by the cables. They have adjusting screws to increase/decrease tension and center arms and pads by the rims. Listening to your description, after cleaning cable, you just need to mount everything and adjust this spring for tensioning, etc. If you want, e-mail me at browns110@hotmail.com to discuss further. |
| thank you very much.... | rich-ca Jan 17, 2002 11:07 AM | | I'm a little out of it. I was looking for a "spring". Now I'm with you. I'll be checking this tonight and will re-post what I find. Thanks for all your help. |
