NADS help please.....RED5

I am in the market for disc brake and one question about the Avid mechs that is bothering me that I cannot seem to find a difinitive answer on. I have heard that the lever feel for the rear brake can fell sort of "mushy" because of the longer cable needed. Is this a problem due to application or the design itself. I have heard that running full lenght housing, which isn't a problem on my bike, helps. Is this true? Please someone put my fears to rest. The bike I am installing on is a 99' K2 F'ing Monkey XL and I am a 6'3" 230lbs guy. Thanks.

........sorta true. Your rear brake is gonna feel just a touch "mushier" than the front, but really less so than it already is with your V-brakes. It's not a problem with the cables, nor with the brakes themselves. Full length housing will help keep the system clean, though.

Some people confuse "mush" with the fact that only about 30% of your braking power is in the rear brake, so when it's not as strong as the front, they claim it's mushy. Mine feels just as firm as the front, just not as strong.

...some people confuse the "mushy" feel of a high leverage brake with lack of power.

Plus, the Avids are very adjustable to get the lever feel you like, especially if you use Avid Speed Dial levers.

I have better feel on the rear with full length housing than using the cable stops. I think it has to do with being able to have smoother curves. Friction the more of a problem than compression.

I have since installed Full Metal Jackets front and rear. They are better but they made more of a difference on the front. The FMJs are well worth using.

Running the cable.......jdcamb

For me I just run a full length housing and secure it to the bike in as many places as you can. From the lever I secured it to the first cable stop, to in between the cable stop, to the next cablestop. All with zip ties. From there I secured it to the front derailluer cable again with a zip tie again. Then finally I rigged up a little rubber loop and zip screwed it on to the rear brake boss with a nylon plug. This keeps the whole length of the cable very stiff. By doing so you can virtually eliminate that mushy feel at the rear lever. That and using good stiff housing. I run Gore brake cables. They are very smooth and pretty impervious to the elements. But many others here are using Aztec BMX brake cable with much success. Just secure the housing to the bike well and you shouldn't have any problems. Goodluck.....jdcamb NADS 007
