Weight of Hayes hydrolic vs XT vs Avid mechanical Discs(7 posts)

Weight of Hayes hydrolic vs XT vs Avid mechanical Discs???

So hayes weighs just a bit more than XT. Where does the avid mechanical system fit in. Assume that one would use the standard avid levers (not ti models) with their sealed brake lines.
The Avids are heaviest but…sparticus

.worth every gram. I've got a 26lb full suspension bike with dual Avid discs plus a 28lb hardtail with dual hydraulic Hayes. (Although one is a race bike and the other is a winter/mud bike, so it's really not fair to compare their weights as they were set up for completely different purposes.)

Anyway, at this stage, I don't plan to ever own another pair of hydraulic discs again. I say this even though both the Hayes and Shimano XTs are excellent disc brakes when it comes to power.

Sorry I didn't answer your specific question. I've never weighed them. It's just that for me the marginal difference in weight between what I consider the best disc brake currently available and other brands that don't include features that are important to me would not be worth the trade-off of a few grams or even a few ounces. But is sounds like weight between these three top quality brakes is your primary concern, so I probably haven't helped you.

Nevermind. I'll probably do nothing with this thead but start an argument. sorry!

P.S. Before the reign of flames commences, please keep in mind that everything I said was prefaced with "in my opinion!"

I can tell you that I was seriously considering the Avids because everyone I ride with who runs them loves them. That includes 3 people I know who tossed their Julies in favour of these, and consider it no contest. I did the calculations as follows.
Use this as a rough guide only. The weights I quote are from Speedgoat, but they have proven reliable in printing true weights for the products they sell. By their numbers:

ASSUMPTION 1 You are running an IS front fork.

Hayes are 455 x 2 for 910gms(maybe add 15g or so for longer rear housing)
XT are 483g plus 30g for hose for a rough total of 1026g
Avids would be 290 x 2(caliper)+ 68 x 2 (IS adapter - note to NADS ? Is this weight right? It seems very heavy for a small adaptor, especially given the Hayes adaptor and bolts are only 25g weighed locally)+ 180g (levers) + 140g for cables = 1036g.
BUT as the NADS will point out, the total Avid package costs only around $275 replacing everything. Spend 20-25 bucks extra and you can spring for the SD Ti levers and drop the weight by 40g. You are still $100 cheaper than the XT or Hayes.
ASSUMPTION 1b - if you are running a Manitou fork, you can drop the Avid weight by 68g as no adaptor is needed, and add a little weight to the XT and Hayes. So for a Manitou fork and SD Ti levers you are 928g - equal or less than Hayes and about .3 pounds lighter than XT and still $100 ahead. Suddenly Sparts is looking smarter and smarter.
Then again, it's not a fair contest since the weight quoted was for an 8" XT versus the 165mm Avid rotors. YADA,YADA,YADA

COmments from the NADS would be much appreciated.
That's impressive! Question or two……………………sparticus

Which type of levers are included with the Avid setup? Are the Ultimates lighter? Seems like a guy could spring for them and STILL be under those other two fine brake brands with regard to cost.

Next, you say: "Then again, it's not a fair contest since the weight quoted was for an 8" XT versus the 165mm Avid rotors." But wasn't there a recent test that showed the 6" Avid to be even more powerful than the 8" Shimano? Or was that the 6" Shimano.? In any case, adequate power will not be an issue even with the "small rotor" Avid brake.

Finally, you say: "Suddenly Sparts is looking smarter and smarter." I am, in fact, flattered by this statement, but I fear that no one will be fooled. In order for someone to be judged "smarter," he must be judged to possess some degree of "smart" in the first place. Me? I'm just a hayseed with a mountain bike and a way-to-good-for-me wife that wants me outta the house. But anyway, thanks.

And nice post!

An answer or two……………………Volkov

Assumption was for the sd-5 or SD-7 as the "standard" lever. The ultimates are $$$ but no lighter than the SD Ti.
My little brain has kept going...
Let's say you already have Avid levers and don't bother spilling for the Flak Jackets when you buy. Then you are looking at only 190 bones instead of $400 for both brakes. That leaves 210 bucks in your pocket. Instead of buying a set of $250 XT disc/317 wheels, blow the farm on a set of Hugi,Am Classic or King Iso wheels. The weight saving on the wheels will far outweigh the small weight penalty the Avid discs had. You'll have wheels that are about 1/2 pound lighter which will feel stinking fast, and your bike is lighter than it would have been if you'd bought the hydros for teh same cost. PLUS remember that rotating weight is the most important, so light wheels are always the best upgrade for speed you can make. You can always drop the coin on the Avid cables later, but you can't easily upgrade your wheels if you are on a budget. So if you blow the trust fund on the brakes, you may be stuck with heavy, cheap wheels for a while.
Now I read your post above, and looking at your soon to be wheels have no other choice but to recognize you as not just smart, but obviously a genius since you have proven my point.
