my 98 died a sudden death. I dare say that I like XP and that it runs smooth....

...been using XP for several months now and have been less than impressed with the stability of the OS. A system which ran exceptionally well under Win98(SE) has been nothing but trouble since the "upgrade" to WinXP took place. I used to be able to run this computer continuously for days/weeks on end with only an occasional shutdown to clear the working memory, now the darn thing locks up, crashes, or dies if left unattended for 30 minutes. This is an improvement? I'm considering pestering some locals friends in the hopes of finding someone with a full install version of Win98 (my version of 98 is the upgrade version) and taking the step back from Windows XP down to '98 if this darned thing doesn't settle down and act normally pretty soon.

Non. (not a WinXP fan...)

I have xp on 2 of my pcs...My web surfing pc has not had a reboot in 7 weeks now, and my gaming/movie box has been going for 5 weeks, despite playing CS and full screen apps daily. Are you using the home edition? XP professional is even more stable than windows 2k server which I upgraded from. I can't believe anyone would like windows 98 better, which was the most unstable OS I ever used. I would have to guess you have some hardware incompatability or lack of memory...don't know without a lot more info. Sometimes older computers have problems running a newer OS. You should check out the forums at www.arstechnica.com for help. And if your computer is older, you might want to try windows millenium, which is basically win98 with most of the bugs worked out.

I agree with Fonseca, XP Pro is solid as a rock so far. I've had some minor issues with having to reinstall programs, but that's mainly 'cause I installed it seperately, and dual boot with 98 right now. I may get rid of 98 sometime, but I'm sure I'll run across something that won't work quite right.

I'm also running Windowblinds, Tweak XP, and the Plus Pack, which SHOULD be slowing my machine down, but it actually runs quite a bit faster, even with all the extra stuff on it.

If you really want to go back to 98 though, I have three or four full install disks, I'll be happy to send you one. If you have room, do what I did, and install XP in a seperate partition or drive, instead of upgrading.

Email me yer addy, I'll send you the disk, along with some other stuff.

Object desktop and acdsee are the only programs which I buy the license to yearly, because they are both really great. I use norton ghost regularly as well, but that's a friend's copy...

you say you upgraded to winxp? xp is the best os ive ever used(correction, best MS os ive ever used)........but, its absolutely horrible if you installed it by upgrading from your current os. i tried upgrading from my 98 install, and i got nothing but trouble out of it(i too thought xp sucked).......very unstable. but then i just did a reformat and clean install of xp pro, and its been golden ever since.....in fact this pc hasnt been rebooted in 25 days(now thats what i call stable!).

if you did do a clean install, then i would look at your hardware.....its true that xp just isnt happy with some older stuff(and even some newer stuff).
complete opposite hereJm

my win 98 died a sudden death. I actually had to fool the computer into thinking I had win98 on it(and I did, it was just that it wasn't being recognized) and then I was able to get to a dos prompt on the XP cd. From there I repaired win 98 enough that I could get it running again, however it was extremely buggy and I was getting tons of error messages. After XP was installed over it though everything was smooth . I haven't had it long, and "knock on wood", but it has impressed me by its smoothness and improvement in ergonomics(more like a mac).
That's because you 'Upgraded' install fresh and testSkitz02

I have a 40 gb drive with two partitions- one has been 'upgraded'
in this path WFW (3.11) W95u, W95A,B,C, W98u, W98SE, W2K, XP pro...and of course
it's got alot of baggage to say the least. It BSOD's all the time. I dual boot into another
clean XP (same HD) and it is rock solid 24/7 (Exchange server -yuck-
is ALWAYS running) -a very stable OS (for MS)if you ask me

You cant judge an OS if it's an upgrade.
