| Magura Disc brakes and Rock Shox compatible???? | mtbr22 Mar 30, 2002 10:40 PM | | I need to get a replacement fork for my bike since i found out that 00' Magura Louise disc brakes aren't compatible with any manitou forks. I found a great deal on a 00' Rock Shox Judy XC fork and i wanted to make sure that 00' magura disc brakes and 00'Magura Louise brakes are compatible...can anyone verify that for me? thanks!!! |
| Normal................ | Mike T. Mar 31, 2002 4:01 AM | | ......International Standard mount Maguras are compatible with the IS mounts on all Rock Shox forks.
Post mount Maguras are compatible with Manitou forks.
You can see the two types of calipers in the Self Adjusting Disc Brake section of my Magura Cult Homepage.

| Couple more questions... | mtbr22 Mar 31, 2002 11:20 AM | | thanks for the info, i looked through it but i'm still not positive about this. Are you sure my 00' Magura Louise caliper has the "international standard mount"...just want to make sure so i don't buy this fork and find out they're not compatible again. Also, one other question, i had the bikeshop set up my rear break (also a 00' louise) on my frame, and when i pull the lever, the rotor flexes about 1/8 of an inch or a little more..i was wondering if this is normal for this type of break? thanks again! |
| Positive................ | Mike T. Mar 31, 2002 12:46 PM | | .....is what I am! You can see diagrams of IS fork tabs and caliper tabs on Magura's web site -
www.magura.de/english/frameset/default.htm
I suggest you go there to give yourself peace of mind.
You have to be careful with brakes (and hubs) of around the 2000 era as there was a change in Hub Standards in 2000 (the rotor was moved closer to the fork leg by 2.6mm) and brake cylinder mounts changed accordingly. You can read all about it on the Manually Adjust disc brake section of my Cult site.
The RS fork WILL have IS brake mounts and the Louise cylinder WILL have IS mounts if it looks like the IS mount cylinders on my Self Adjust brake pages. Yes I'm fully aware that Louise in 2000 were manually adjusting but all you're concerned about is the mount configuration here.
As for your last question - "when i pull the lever, the rotor flexes about 1/8 of an inch or a little more"
My answer is - run, don't walk, away from this shop as they know nothing about manually adjusting Magura disc brakes. The rotor is moving sideways because the inner pad is adjusted waaaaaaay too far away from the rotor. The info on how to do this adjustment is on my pages also. That inner pad MUST be adjusted as close to the rotor as possible without any pad scrub being present. The rotor to cylinder gap must be right too.
With that brake (not spelled "break!!!") there is only one moving piston and it pushes the rotor sideways into the fixed pad - an ingenious idea which Avid uses now for their cable disc brake. The fixed pad must be as close as possible. You can adjust the outer pad as far away as you like from the rotor to give you the lever feel that pleases you best.
