Help, Avid CPS rotor deformation! (3 posts)
| Help, Avid CPS rotor deformation! | chrisJohn Mar 31, 2002 9:23 AM | | Have noticed for some time that the front rotor had a MINOR shimmy. Rode in an enduro race yesterday, came home and found my shiny new front wheel with an American Classic disc hib waiting for me. Slapped the rotor and tire on, mounted it, and then adjusted the caliper. The shimmy seems greater, almost the entire width between the pads.
Question 1? Is this due to unequal bolt tension?
Question 2? Does this mean I have to folk out money for a new rotor?
Question 3? Are non Avid rotors okay?
Obvious Question, How do I fix this with existing rotor?
Thanks and take care |
| I'd try two things... | næstep Mar 31, 2002 9:40 AM | | First, I'd remove the rotor and turn it 180°, then reinstall it to the hub. Check then to see if the shimmy has become any better or worse.
If that doesn't do it, wash your hands off or throw on a pair of latex gloves, and bend it back into true (leaving it bolted to the hub the whole time). Some of the other guys recommend to go so far as to use a cresent wrench and a rag to the bending, but the finger and thumb method has worked for me. It doesn't take much, so go slow and in small increments.

| Agree with Nate | Spar¡cus Mar 31, 2002 10:39 PM | | Rotors are easily trued by hand. Not only do I leave the rotor bolted to the wheel, I leave the wheel in the fork (or frame). With the bike in the stand, I spin the wheel to see where the problem spots are, then make adjustments with my fingers. It's just like truing a wheel. This method works quickly and easily.
