NADS folks and other Avid discitians, please help!JoelDee

I must confess, I'm having some second thoughts about these Avid discs. I've had them for perhaps five months, and my rear is giving me trouble. (Rear BRAKE, that is. I don't need any ointment or anything, and I eat enough fiber.) :)

Here's the deal. It's taken constant tinkering and adjustment, and I can't get it to work properly without it squealing. Not so much under braking, but especially when I'm just pushing the bike or riding it lightly. It's not an adjustment issue. Trust me, I'm a pro by now. I'll hear a light squeal/sqwawk with every revolution of the wheel. If I back the pads off, it doesn't help much unless they're so far backed off that they don't work. I know it's the caliper and not the hub, and I can't detect any warping of the rotor. I'm using XTR levers.

If I reset everything, I can get it to go away for a ride or so, then it's back. I did notice that the outboard pad may not be retracting fully, which would explain the problem. Is there an easy fix for this, or might Avid fix this? The front brake has given me zero problems.

I've been wanting to request NADS membership, but I cannot do so with a clean heart until this problem is resolved. I would never besmirch the integrity of the NADS.

Thanks for any help.

......removing the cable from the brake before adjusting it? Remove cable, adjust brake perfectly (inner pad first) then re-attach the cable while not pulling it tight enough to move the arm. Check cable for slackness and if there is any, remove it with the lever cable adjuster but don't tighten this adjuster enough to move the brake arm.
It most likely is the pad not retractingshiggy©®™

It can be fixed in any of three ways:

* Remove the pads and use a flat bladed screwdriver to spread the pad retension spring open a little wider.

* File the "slot" on the tabs of the pads a bit more open

or
* Call Avid and get the new pads with the springs
It's the retraction...melanthius

...or lack thereof. Mine were doing that after a really muddy ride, and it turned out that muck had gotten between the magnet and pad, effectively limiting the effectiveness of the magnet. I just had to clean mine out.

I have had that happen, too. (nm)shiggy

Do you have a picture of the part to file?Billy Zoom

Do you just mean to widen the opening between the two tabs a bit? (I'm more of a visual person). :) Thanks for your help. Hopefully I can get this squared away.

I appreciate your help. (Only an addict would decide to start working on something so trivial at 10:45 pm, when he'll be waking up at 4:45 to get a ride in at 6:15 before work. I may even replace my fork boots if the Starbucks hasn't worn off by then.) Hee hee.
