Bleeding Hayes Brakes(3 posts)

Bleeding Hayes BrakesFitzwell

Recently bought pre-owned bike with Hayes Hydro brakes. Wanted to adjust lever because it only locks up rear wheel when it's too close to grip for my taste. Started to revove cover on front of lever which seeped small amount of fluid while unscrewing (Not a good sign) so I threading back in.

Questions:
1) Can I use DOT 3 or 4 fluid to refill resevoir?
2) Will my lever work sooner from top after bleeding system?. If not, how do I adjust lever?

You can use DOT 3 or 4, I use DOT 5.1 which is a higher boiling pt DOT 4 type fluid. Do not use silicone DOT 5 fluids.

If the brake is working properly the lever will pull about 15-20mm between rest and working, if it's more it's probably low on fluid and a bleed will fix it. The final lever position of course depends on the adjuster screws.
Just make sure to push the pads right back then remove them before bleeding, it's the easiest way to get the fluid level right.

The lever adjusters are found right at the end of the cylinder cartridge in the levers. You adjust them with a small allen key...there's a decent amount of adjustment available. If you look in the end of the levers you'll see them just above the pivot point on the end of the cylinder piston rod.
