| manitou xt disc caliper difference | jdodd Apr 1, 2002 3:04 PM | | I just wanted to know if the manitou version of the xt disc brake was any different then the regular one. does it just come with a special adapter or is the whole caliper different. thanks |
| I think you get an adapter.... | Monte Apr 1, 2002 5:10 PM | | and the caliper remains the same. I was just looking around somewhere and saw it. Didn't bookmark it though.

| either or.................BUT........... | heff® Apr 1, 2002 5:18 PM | | Shimano has a Manitou specific caliper, which is the better route to go. You can also use a post mount adapter, if you want. HOWEVER, in either case, you need to use a 170mm rotor, not the standard 160mm. If you buy the Manitou specific brakeset, you get the bigger rotor. If you don't, you have to buy a seperate rotor.

| I put mine on last week. | Nor'Easter Apr 1, 2002 5:24 PM | | I mounted mine on the Black Fork the other day. Piece of Cake everything seemed like it had a 0.003" tolerance. Perfect fit, though I used all the shims that came with kit to center the caliper on rotor. Came with the Shimano Adaptor and 170mm rotor.
FYI JensonUSA has this set advertised for $79.00 + cable. |
| so its not just a rotor-adapter change? | jdodd Apr 3, 2002 12:53 PM | | Sorry to ask again, i just wanted to clarify. I can't run the manitou specific brakeset on a say a marzocchi even if i have the standard rotor? Thanks again. |
| Looks to me like | Nor'Easter Apr 3, 2002 4:58 PM | | From the kit I got it looks to me like you could skip the adaptor for Manitou 74mm mount and use the (IS hole pattern) caliper with the 160mm rotor. The adaptor for Manitou adds 5mm to the mounting position of the caliper so hence the additional 10mm to the diameter of the rotor necessary. |
| Is there a difference XT Brake Front /Rear Caliper kits? | Nor'Easter Apr 1, 2002 6:15 PM | | Is there a difference in the standard front and rear brake kits. Many online retailers have only the front listed as a selection. But is there a difference in the shimano Part #s? Can I buy the front 160mm kit and mount it to the back and vice versa? |
| Normally... | næstep Apr 1, 2002 7:37 PM | | ...you can go to shimano.com and click on to their European site, where they have exploded view .pdf diagrams of all their stuff and which provides much more useful product info then their US site. The European site is down tonight, but I noticed on their Japan site that they do offer a standard rotor and a Manitou rotor. (I also noticed Shimano sells golf clubs and snowboards in Japan!!!)
Kinda weird, but their Deore mechanical units are produced in a 74mm Manitou version and in a IS version, but the IS version is still a post mount-type system that uses an adapter bracket much like Avid or Hayes, only with narrower c2c spacing on the mounts. They both use the same size rotor. You'd think that purely for cost and distribution reasons, they'd have gone with a 74mm post mount with an adapter bracket for IS tabs, much like Avid and Hayes, or gone purely IS eliminating the adapter bracket entirely like Hope or Magura.
Oh well...

| Nate, yer talking about Shimano here........... | heff® Apr 1, 2002 8:47 PM | | .....even their OWN STUFF isn't compatible most of the time.
Now the new XTR disks use splined lockring mounts for the rotors, rather than the IS 6 bolt.
Oh, the other question......the XT calipers are different front and rear, you can't mount a rear on the front, or vice versa. Well, actually, you COULD, but you'd need to use 1mm spacers and a 140mm rotor to mount the front on the rear, and the rear won't fit on the front at all.

| Yes, fronts and rears are different.... | Monte Apr 2, 2002 7:37 AM | | The calipers are different and you get a right hand lever assembly with the rear caliper and a left hand lever assembly with the front. Neither have hoses, gotta buy those extra. When you buy the hoses make sure you ask (might have to use the phone to order) if they are the new hoses with the plastic cover. That started with the 2002's I think. The 2001's have the bare stainless steel cover.
