leaky Tetro hydraulic discs...(2 posts)

leaky Tetro hydraulic discs...Mr. Guy
Apr 2, 2002 7:28 PM
I've got a set of 2001 Tektro Gemini hydraulic discs (similar to Codas), and they seem to have a leaking problem. I've repeatedly cleaned the pads & Caliper, and I always have several drops of fluid on the backs of the pads after a ride. They seemed great at first, but after they broke in, the seemed to lose power. At the end of a ride (when the heat had finally cooked the goo out of the pads), they were great, but at the start, it was like they hadn't been broken in. Any ideas? Tektros website was NOT helpful. Thanks,

Allan

If you've got fluid coming out onto the back of the pads then you have bad piston seals or scratched pistons. It's warranty or spare parts time for you. And if you hve to do your own work then pay particular attention to the condition of the sides of the pistons where the seals rub. Any scratching that you can see fairly easily is enough to let fluid leak out as you've described and this means you'll need new pistons unless the scratches are very minor. If they are minor you can try polishing them out with some 2000 grit wet or dry paper followed by some regular heavy writing paper with some rubbing compound on it. If they are deeper to the point that you would have to remove any significant amount of metal you're in for new pistons as well. Otherwise just replace the seals, clean up everything well and put the calipers back together...... and hope....
