those cheap Formulas @ Jensonusa(11 posts)

those cheap Formulas @ JensonusaPablo

I'm tepted to pick up a set of thsese for a future bike build. I really prolly only need V's, but I have to admit I'm a little interested in disks and $25 is tempting.

Any thoughts on these from the brake gurus?

I picked up a couple of sets from them and they work great. I first bought one set and after using them, picked up another set to have as spares. Just having the extra rotors or pads for that price is worth it. These came with everything I needed to mount the brakes and even came with instructions. I didn't need to use any shims either.

For 25$ those formulas are choice. My friend got them and I really like them.

.........for the most part.

They're not as powerful as other offerings, but still excellent brakes. If you think you don't need more than V's, they'll be great for you. Don't forget about the wheels, though. If you don't have disk hubs already, you'll need them.

....that's a good laugh Thor!

I'm loving mine I'll tell ya! They are the easiest disc brakes that I've ever set up (about twice as fast as Avid), great power and smooth operation.

Even though the Jenson brakes didn't come from you, they are sure doing you some favors with publicity!

I bought some from JensonUSA about 2 weeks ago and posted a very detailed review on here (you can probably search on my name and find it, and there are good replies also. Or just surf back a spell). I had nothing but trouble and appalled by the low quality. On the one hand, I have a set of Avids (proud NADS #99 here) so a lower-quality offering is going to seem inferior by comparison, but on the other hand I simply could not make them work properly and thats not acceptable - even for $50 a set. If I were you I would keep this in mind: There are very few parts on the bike that you rely on as heavily as brakes to keep you alive - maybe not the best place to cut corners.

But, if you just can't stomach the $170 for Avids, at least do yourself a favor - pay a little extra and buy your Activas through Thorsten. By all accounts Thor stands behind the products he sells, and it appears that the sets he has may be of a higher quality also.

Trick to any mechanical disc is finding the perfect lever...DeeEight

to get the optimal leverage out of the system. Since you probably won't be able to find the 'ideal' formula specific lever, get something easily adjusted like Avid speeddial levers.

Myself I stocked up on new rockshox discs from one of the dealers on ebay because I wanted spares (and new disc brakesets were costing me less than what Amp charges to do a caliper overhaul) even though I already owned several spares (I'm up to about 8 total spare brakes now) and hell, most of my bikes are still cantilever setups because as you cited in your case, don't really need anything else.

I have less than 100 miles on mine but I love the power and lever feel so far. I had some squealing in the front which has disappeared now except under very heavy braking. I expect that to go away too as they break in more. I'm using Avid AD 3 (cheapy) levers.
