Rotor rotation/orientation.(12 posts)

Rotor rotation/orientation.B R H

While going thru the owner's manuals on the Hope website (links below), I noticed that Figure 1 regarding rotor orientation is different in each document. One shows proper rotation in one direction and the other shows just the opposite. Also on their website is an brake review by MBA with pictures showing rotors mounted both ways! It sure seems like this would be important structurally or at the least for vibration. Which orientation is correct? I'm not sure how to describe the rotation though... a picture is probably best.

... They are a little confused aren't they.

If it's any consolation to you both my disc sets (one Hayes and one Shimano) have the rotors set up as per the first link in your post, the one with all the 2's.pdf. Do the rotors themselves have an etched in arrow like both of mine do?

Maybe they will reward you with a free brake set if you point this out to them? Just ask them to mark the rotation direction of the rotor before they send it...... :o)

so that's why I asked. Mine are the same as yours, which I guess I'll have to assume is correct since my girlfriend's are the same as well. Funny how the pictures in that magazine article shows them both ways too... duh, I bet it's because the photos were flipped when they were laying them out for the article.

I sent Hope an e-mail on this a few days ago but haven't heard anything. I hope they respond more promptly when I need parts!

some materials like the metal discs are better withstanding stretching forces than compression forces or vice versa without bending slightly causing squealing. i dunno which way round is best and probably doesnt really matter but try which ever way doesnt squeal. if neither squeals put it on which ever way looks best.

The company name is Hope because

You Hope they work
You Hope they can provide accurate tech info
You Hope you finally get it shimmed right
You Hope the squeal goes away

And the list goes on!!!
I hope not...B R H

Actually, I couldn't be happier with the brakes. Much higher quality than my girlfriend's Hayes. Just no comparison. I do wish they would respond to my e-mail though.
Call them. Slow to respond to email.El Jester

They are busy and don't have too many people in the California office so I also just called them.

I liked mine and my friends like the performance of theirs, but they are a setup nightmare. I just sold of mine and got Hayes!! (wanted both bikes to be the same for ease of swapping components) Found that the modulation not quite as good but stoppoing power is equal.

The Hope's do look good!! I'm upgrading to the new Hope sawblade rotors for my Hayes. Sweet
I run my Minis the way shown in the 2d Manualgonzostrike

didn't even realize there was another manual out there. let us know if you hear from Hope.

btw, I suggest calling them at their California office for Hope USA, telephone number ---> Toll Free: (+1) 800-303-6863
1st one is newer I thinkB R H

Yeah, the 2nd manual is the one that came with my brakes. I think the first one is newer since it talks about the Minis directly thruout. I'd be surprised if the rotors are intended to be mounted either way. The way the first one shows would seem to be structurally stronger, but perhaps more likely to vibrate. The 2nd would seem to be less prone to vibration, but just maybe not quite as strong. I really don't know though.

Yeah, the first manual is definitely the most recent because it has the M4 in it. I honestly dont think it makes a difference which way it goes. The strength issue is not really an issue (or something) as I've never seen a broken spoke on a rotor.

grimeca rotor same problemSucka

I am going thru the same thing with a 8" Grimeca rotor I bought for my Xt discs. the arrow for direction of rotation causes the rotor to look the opposite of the shimano rotor's. This is even though the 8" rotor looks structurally the same as the smaller shimano.

Sucka

Grimeca rotors mount with the spokes trailing. I have (had) 2 Grimeca rotors (system 7) which both went on this way.
