Question about hydro disc brakes and lever feel...(4 posts)

Question about hydro disc brakes and lever feel...Joe Mamma Bitz

I was wondering, is it normal for the rear brake to feel a little 'squishier' than the front because the lines are longer and have more fluid? Or should the front and rear feel the same no matter what?
My XT front and rear feel a little different. nmMonte

I went through two hydro systems in a week. First I got a Rockhopper with Magura Julies. These were soft in the rear. Bled them and found an air bubble. After that they both felt pretty much the same with perhaps a very slight extra sponginess in the rear but only if you pulled hard enough that the wheel would be TOTALLY locked up.

Didn't like the bike after one ride (lots of various reasons) so I traded it for a Stumpjumper with Deore hydros. Here again these both feel so solid within the pressure range used for normal stopping that I can't feel any difference. Only if I squeeze like crazy can I feel any difference.

Another sign of an unwanted air bubble from my experience was the lever with the bubble touched down before the good one but only got firm with the lever was farther in than the good one.

I have Hope 04's and they feel different. I would think weight distribution would have an impact as well as the physical condition of the rotors and pads etc. When I go fast through water the front stays dry and the rear is drenched.
