I used to use plain cheap cables/housing for my mechs (6 sets of them) and they felt just fine. However, when I was setting one of my brakes on a new frame, I decided to try flackjacket cable/housing (it was on sale :D )
BIG difference. It completely takes away any mushy feel that you may experience with plain housing (due to coil-like steel internals that compress when you squeeze the brake really hard). Flackjacket has straight steel lines running parallel to housing, so there's nothing to compress.
Also, I highly recommend running full housing to rear brake.
The only problem with Flackjacket is that it's meant for V brakes, so 1 set will not be enough for both front and rear (full housing).

Avid now has a flak jacket disc housing sets available. The difference? I'm betting they give you more housing than the V brake version for the same price.
I just installed someSteve from JH

Haven't ridden the bike yet except around the yard. But it sure does feel smooth. They give you enough housing to replace the cables and reuse the flak jacket tubing many times over. In fact if I went to the LBS and bought that much housing I would probably pay more than I did for the whole flak jacket kit.

... From the description of the Flakjacket housing it sounds like these two are much the same in construction. I've got the Jagwire housing with the same longitudinal wires (similar to SIS shifter housing) and they work just great.

I don't think it's the cables so much as the housing. Just get good cables. I've tried the teflon cables and they worked nice for the first year or two but after that the teflon wore and the cable cut into the housing causing it to feel slugish. Now I just stick with the smooth ground outer finish cables. These feel very smooth at the levers.

derailuer housing over brake housing with plain cables. Not as mushy.

The derailuer housing will split under the pressure of braking and you are SOL

brake and shifter housing exactly the same?

Flak Jackets are a combo of brake and shifter housing. It has the parallel wires, like shifter housing, to reduce compression, and then those are wrapped with the wound flat wire like regular brake housing the prevent it from bursting. You could use Flak Jackets for shifters if you wanted.
So yes?fonseca

So the housing you get in flak jacket brake packages is the same as in the shifter version, sans cables, right? I have never been able to discern any difference between the two...when cut they look the same internally.
I do not use gear housing so I do not knowshiggy
