| best brake when wet? | sean Apr 4, 2002 8:43 AM | | The stock brakes from my 2000 Specialized Rockhopper suck. When they get wet, I have a hard time stopping. What would you fine readers and mtb'ers recommend I do for an upgrade?
I have seen that great Formula disc deal, and am curious about these.
Should I somehow adjust my current brakes/replace the pads?
Should I upgrade my brakes?
Should I switch to disc?
Help!
I believe I have tektro brakes right now, but am not positive. they are whatever crappy brake came with the bike.
Thanks in advance for the great advice I am about to receive. |
| most v-brakes leave something to be desired when wet....... | Tom Collins Apr 4, 2002 10:12 AM | | the best way to get good v-brake performance in the wet is with ceramic-coated rims. But then, it's a good idea to get pads that are ceramic-rim specific. My understanding is that those don't perform very well when they're DRY, though.
If you get the Formulas, it'll cost you less than a set of ceramic rims, to be sure. BUT, you might run into problems if your wheelset isn't disc-compatible. If your hubs don't have disc mounts on them, you'll have to get a new wheelset (or at the very least, new hubs).
If you sell the vees and wheels, you can probably upgrade to disc for a very reasonable price.
But generally speaking, disc is the only way to go if you ride in wet conditions a lot. |
